Are 68's like 67's? If so you have a engine harness separate from the headlight harness. If its in the engine harness you have a brown for brake (fail) a blue for oil pressure and a green for water temp. Got any pictures including what type of end is on the wire?

If you car is equipped with idiot lights I would leave it. For cosmetic reasons you can neatly tape it back in the harness towards the fire wall plug. Its nice to leave all that stuff there in case you ever want to put it back into service. Mechanical gauges (with the tube)are normally very accurate but don't always get your attention. Some people run both....Good luck sounds like your making good progress.
