Is there any easy way of removing minor scratches in windows? I have one of my door windows that has a few minor scratches in it. I have tried using polishing compund using a 2" pneumatic angle grinder with a cotton polishing pad without any luck.

If you can feel it AT ALL with your fingernail.... forget it. Otherwise get some cerium oxide and try that.

Minor scratches can be removed but it's not easy. You'll need some cerium oxide abrasive, a felt bob and a lot of patience. Stick the wheel in a drill motor, squirt some of the cerium oxide on the glass and go to it. Glass is hard so it will take some time but as long as the scratch is not too deep you can polish it out. Keep the speed low so you don't get a lot of heat build up. You can get the abrasive and wheel at McMaster Carr, I think they also sell a kit.

My best guess is, When you are all done with the polish and buffing.
You will buy some new or better used glass. I am waiting to hear one good story on someone that has had real sucess on polishing and or buffing.

As long as the scratch is shallow enough that it doesn't catch a fingernail it will polish out just fine. I polished out the windshield wiper marks on my '62 Tempest and it turned out just fine. The problem most people have is they try to remove too large a scratch or they give up too soon. It's a very slow process but well worth the effort in my case since a new windshield was $700.

Thanks Tom for a positive story about removing minor scratches. The glass that I have isn't really that bad, I just wanted to clean it up a little. I'm with you when it comes to saving the expense of buying new glass. I'll give it a try and "then" if it doesn't work I'll look around for some new glass.

Thanks againg for the info!

FYI, Zaino makes a nice glass polish that works well.

Thanks everybody for your input! I'll buy some cerium oxide or Zaino and give it a try. It's worth a try before having to replace the glass that is $200 for each side.
