Where all factory radios available in 70 elkys?Such as am-fm stereos and stereo 8trks? If so, I am guessing that they used only front speakers.I am also guessing there was no placment for rear speakers.Thanks,Jim

For what it's worth...my '70 has two speakers, one at either end of the dash.

This is a good and very important question. So let me address it :D

First off, There was ABSOLUTELY NO FACTORY STEREO EQUIPMENT AVAILABLE IN EL CAMINOS, PERIOD!!!

Why?

All the Delco stereo systems were designed for use with 4 speakers, the most an El Camino had was (2). There are no rear speakers, there were no ultra-rare smugglers compartment speakers, etc. The 70-72's had dash pads with TWIN SPEAKERS, and they only way you could get a twin speaker dash pad in a 70-72 Elky was if you ordered factory A/C. The A/C duct in the center automatically eliminated the standard single center dash speaker.

So keeping this in mind...

You could get an AM-Pushbutton radio, and AM/FM-pushbutton radio and that's it.

No AM/FM-stereo. No AM/8-track radio, No AM/FM-8 track radio, NO AM radio with rear speaker fader option, No AM/FM radio with rear fader option.

I have a 72 SS Elky. I am installing the dash now and can't get the aftermarket speaker I bought on the drivers side of the dash because it hits the instrument cluster. Was there a special design for the factory speaker? For what it's worth my car only had a speaker on the passenger side of the dash when I bought it.

My 72 Chevelle with A/C has two 3" dash speakers. That's all there's room for.

you can hide a couple of 6 x 9's like this very easily

paint it interior color and it won't stand out.Now if its a numbers matching,concours winning and has to be original appearing this won't help although there's plenty of room in the bed for a boom box.:D
