: Motors done goes in tomorrow (pics)
ricks_67 Jun 17th, 08, 1:22 PM rebuilt the 408 after the cam went. the bores are from .001 and .002 over from the damage done from the cam coming apart, the block was fresh bored 60 over last year. Lunati regound the voodoo solid roller into a 60212 voodoo hyd roller. being laid off there was no way I could afford to bore the block .010 and order custom pistons. two machinsts said just make sure the motor is up to temperature before getting on it.

PCB67SS Jun 17th, 08, 3:30 PM Rick that looks great......Sorry to hear about your cam loss and the related work it caused. I hope you have better luck with this new (refurbished) bullet and will be pulling for you to have a perfect break in run. Good Luck
wills65 Jun 17th, 08, 3:36 PM motor looks purdy, good luck on the break in!
Better upate this thread with some pics. Motor is now in.
How do I know? I was there as we installed it and then installed the... um...er... umm.... the automatic tranny where the 4-speed used to be. :(
Ouch that hurt to do. Another stick shift guy goes off the deep end.:D
The motor looked as good if not nicer in person that it did in the photos. Hope it runs as good. Fire it up Rick!

Brian
Freddy Mercado Jun 20th, 08, 6:47 PM Sweet!!!!
LeoP Jun 20th, 08, 8:27 PM OK Rick, ya only got a week before the MCC show, git er done!!!!!!!
SWHEATON Jun 20th, 08, 8:56 PM Rick, you said motor was rblt due to a prior cam failure so even though its a roller cam why not play it safe and run an oil like chevron delo 400 LE 15w-40 or shell rotella single grade 30wt that both have good zddp lvl along with gm eos or cranes suplerlube engine breakin concentrate for your fresh motors fireup.
It cant hurt to have the zddp even though roller cams dont typically need it like the flat tappets do . But with the higher spring rates a hi perf cam like yours is running the zddp could be a help and some insurance esp since you already had the cam go bad requiring a regrind & motor rbld .
Just my 2 cent's.
BTW,your motor looks real nice and good luck with it.
Scott
ricks_67 Jun 20th, 08, 9:29 PM Thanks for the advise Scott. I picked up a bottle of crane breakin lube a couple of weeks ago. I'm using that and kendall 10/40 for breakin and then planned on going with the delo 15/40. I printed out a list you had posted in another thread to take with me. I sent the cam that went bad back to lunati and they couldn't find anything wrong other then it was bent .004. they reground to a 60212 voodoo hyd roller.
Don't remind me Leo. I did this same thing a couple of years ago. I got the car running wednesday took it for a 30 mile drive thursday and left friday after work for MCC.
Thanks Freddy, Brian, and David
ricks_67 Jun 22nd, 08, 5:54 AM VIDEO LINK Got the motor started yesterday, I had 1 rocker arm alittle loose ran the motor for about 20 minutes shut it down and checked the valves and then restarted and check the timing.

GRN69CHV Jun 22nd, 08, 7:08 AM So did you have to readjust any valves? or was it just that lifter not pumped up all the way?
ricks_67 Jun 22nd, 08, 7:18 AM yes it was off. when I set them I put a mark on the nut top (intake side of head)then turned down 1/2 turn then backed off and set jamb screw and thightened. #2 intake was off I knew it as soon as I saw the mark at the top of the nut and not at the bottom (Exhaust side of head) Felt tip markers work in oil too.
GRN69CHV Jun 22nd, 08, 7:43 AM Now I see. You had it at "0" lash, but no preload. Once you run it, let us know how the 1/2 turn preload works for you. I am at 1 turn preload with my CamMotion cam and Crane Lifters, running 10w-30 oil. Mine seems to like the full turn of preload. The lifters with the longer travel can typically run more preload. As it has been explained to me, even though these are hydraulic, there is some compression in the plunger which bleeds off duration, so you run more spring which allows you to set the plunger deeper in the lifter and keep those few extra degrees duration in the valve motion.
ricks_67 Jun 22nd, 08, 7:52 AM Sounded good when I restarted it. If the rain stops I'll take the car for a drive today. I want to see how the th400 works.
