: looking for .37 for new 11.49 goal
66SBCDUECE Dec 30th, 04, 11:09 AM Well now with new rollbar rule being 11.49 i figure why not try it somehow! Old 11.99 goal was met this year with a best 11.86 113.7 mph. Only problem my 66 nova only has 327. Current comp. is 9.8 to 1 and dcr is between 7.9 and 8.0. Cam is solid flat UD 276/284F6 IN at 101. Heads are ported on intake only twisted wedge heads 253/195 at .500 lift 28"! Harold originally suggested his infamous 288/296 F5 which is 12 more degrees at .050". Would that cam with with bump in comp. to 10.3 with 1094 shim head gasket possibly get me the 11.49 goal or should i look at a solid roller with 4 or less degree spread on intake/exhaust duration. Car is 3275# 5 speed nova with 4.10 gear and 1200 mile per year street driven! Any suggestions or recommendations are appreciated and happy holidays to all! AL
onovakind67 Dec 30th, 04, 11:28 AM Is a new cam the only thing you've considered?
66SBCDUECE Dec 30th, 04, 11:47 AM What else is there with out spending a lot of money and keeping it street usable.
Thanks
onovakind67 Dec 30th, 04, 11:58 AM If I wanted to pick up 4 tenths I wouldn't look for it all in one place. There must be 10 places in your setup you can pick up .04 seconds.
Weight reduction?
Exhaust tuning and physics?
Timing curve?
Launch rpm?
Shift rpm?
Tire coefficient of friction?
Tire height?
Tire pressure?
Practice?
Shallow staging?
Cold air induction?
Carb tuning?
Suspension tuning?
Alignment?
Coefficient of drag?
Wheel weight?
Electric accessories like fan, water pump?
Rear gears?
66SBCDUECE Dec 30th, 04, 12:13 PM Those are all great places. Maybe i am just too impatient and greedy right now. thanks much, AL
onovakind67 Dec 30th, 04, 12:16 PM Install a top-shot - it should be an easy 4 tenths.
66SBCDUECE Dec 30th, 04, 3:21 PM Would that be the 75 horse blast 67? Did try different lauch rpm(4500-5500} and short shifting 2nd(7000 and6500}.Car likes 5500 launch and 6500 shortshift at 2nd! Last run of year car dead hooked with 5to 6 inch wheels up but only ran 12.00! Love those caltracs with 60 footers basically in the 1.64to 1.67 range. NEED some tire spin to obtain 7.56 eight mile.If car dead hooks she will bog and loose 1 to 1.5 tenths even though 60footer will go 1.64 verse 1.67 with some tire spin! thanks again AL
greg_moreira Dec 30th, 04, 4:56 PM Some carb tuning will help that bog. A 5500 launch with a 5 speed shouldnt bog so much that you lose over a tenth.... really with that combo, it shoulnt really bog at all with all that gear in such a light car. Thats why Id say check the tunuep. For example, think about the action of the accelerator pump and pump cam when you depress the throttle. Depending on the carb, and if the settings on that carb are stock(pump cam and accelerator pump in this case) you might be just about completely out of the pump shot when you launch with the throttle depressed enough to maintain 5500rpm at launch. See what Im sayin. You should be able to adjust the pump cam, so if you set it to one of the settings which makes the cam come in slower and later, you will have more shot left upon launch and that should help to eliminate the bog. It might not completely do the trick, and it might not do anything at all depending on what youve already done with the tunuep. But air fuel ratio, timing, and accelerator pump settings are some of the things I would look into with a bog under those conditions. If you think in terms of a street car, if that carb aint race bred, than the majority of your accelerator pump probably lies at a lower engine rpm due to the motion of the cam.........and the carbueretors assumption that this is a street motor that needs it at a lower rpm, not 5500rpm. Know what I mean. I wouldnt rule out a bit more compresion and a cam swap, but like the others are sayin, there are many other things that can and usually will help you out, one of them being some in depth tuning of what you already got. Good luck.
66SBCDUECE Jan 2nd, 05, 8:21 PM Talked to guys at camaro tech and they told me about John Wilsons old wedge heads flowing 281 at .500 that were ported TEA (total engine airflow)! I think his intake port size was approx. 200 cc which is 16 cc more than my current size. His flow numbers were approx. 30 more cfm from .300 to .600 lift!I think theoretically that could be worth 40 to 60 more horse but a little concerned with port size hurting performance!!Could the fact that these twisted wedge heads with the great low and mid lift flow numbers not hurt velocity and performance on this 327 combo?? Thanks much for any info on this matter. AL
ddeennis Jan 2nd, 05, 10:48 PM i agree with onovakind67 so much can be found in fine tuning or as some call it super tuning..........i myself have found anywhere from 50 to 70 hp just in fine tuning alone......you will be surprised with what can be found....and most of it is next to free.....
some areas to look at.....
cooling the air intake charge....oil splash shield under intake....carb spacers...wrap fuel line....carb heat shields....cold air induction..block off heat cross overs...synthetic oils, stock clutch fans, over size pulleys, wrapping headers, using 18" collector extensions, extended tip plugs, playing with plug gaps, timing , jetting, shift points, suspension, isulate 5/7 plug wires, using some sort of air straighting device for the carb if not running nothing, playing with valve lash, use lighter wheels and tires, use alum drums, alum drive shaft.(kinda expensive) use small hormonic balancer reduce weight off crank snout....,the list can almost be endless.......
