: Narrowing Stock Framerails?

I was wondering if anyone has narrowed their factory framerails on a '65-'67 Chevelles. I have seen bunches of backhalf kits and even some that say that they will fit under the stock floorboards. I dont want to backhalf the car. I just want to narrow the stock rails 3 1/2" on each side. The reason for this is of course to fit some tires under my car bigger than the 275's that seem to be the biggest you can go without hitting something. The tires I would like to set under the car are the BFG Drag Radials of the 325/5015 variety. I think they are about 13" section width on a 10" rim and approx 28" tall. Moving 3 1/2" in on each side so that I can get 10.50W's under it for the strip. If anyone has done this or knows where I can get some good pictures of where they cut the frame and how they moved the rails in, I would really appreciate it. I know Mark Steilow did it on Malitude before Jody bought it, but but I havent been able to find any good info on how it was done. Thanks!

PS: Mods, Sorry if this is in the wrong place, move it if neccesary.

can you go to the phr web site and find the articles on the maltitude in the tech section?

there arent any articles about the actual chassis modification. just the magazine feature and the bodywork article. nothing on the frame work...

I did it on a '65 but you can't get 3.5 inches, I got about 2.5 by cutting the outer half of the frame box tube from just where the rise begins in frt. of the wheel to the body mount behind the wheel. after cutting off the outer half I fabbed up another plate and welded in it's place also plated the top and bottom w/10 ga. x 2 inch flat metal. basicly made the original inside rail the new outside rail. I was able to keep the stock spring location but I did relocate the lower shock mounts 2.5 inches inward don't think you can get any more than this, I'm right in to the top spring seat you will also need to mini tub the car or at least modify the stock inner fenders and probably relocate the rear body mount just behind the wheel. It was a lot of work and looking back I don't know if it was worth it but I can get a lot more tire under the car!

My buddy had a 67 chevelle drag car years ago that the PO did this same modifiation to fit 31x13 slicks. The rails were really thin and didn`t seem very strong considering it was a low 10 second car but it held up. I also remember seeing a 64 chevelle with a narrowed rearend and 325/50/15 hoosiers. It wasn`t tubbed because I looked under it and it still had the factory style control arms but it was dark and I couldn`t see what he did. i did over hear him saying something about moving the frame rails inboard but I don`t know what he did. Looked awsome though.

I planned on minitubbing it too, wouldnt be much point to moving the rails in if I didnt minitubb it too. So 2 1/2" is the most I can get away with huh.....time to get creative
