Looked at the carb to make sure it wasn't seeping out of there. Fuel lines don't appear to be leaking. Where else should I check? Never had this smell before.

A tiny bit of gas in the garage can make a strong odor. It will also evaporate quickly so it will be hard to find. Take it for a drive while the garage airs out, then check for leaks when you get back home. Check your floats also, it can leak into the intake from the vents.

I hope you find it.

I'm thinking it's the floats, but when I checked they were fine. I just don't know what is causing this to happen. I have tried to air out the garage, take it for a spin and then check again and nothing seems wrong. I might just have to take a closer look at the floats. Thanks for your reply.

The hoses on both ends of the main line can seep when they get cracked. Gary

All I can say is if you smell it -- it's there. Trust your nose on this. Keep looking. I had a '90 5.0 Mustang that drove me nuts. I finally spotted wetness on the filler tube when filling up. The filler neck had a rubber sleeve on it but had rusted out under the sleeve causing seepage. Not so easy on my 76 Vette -- I had to drop the tank to get at the leaking line on top. Just go over the fuel system from back to front then back again. You can't afford to ignore this. Plus, if the garage is connected to the house, has a water heater or gas dryer in it -- move the car outside till you figure it out. I have personal knowledge of garage fires caused by leaking gas. Good luck.

You did'nt mention your fuel tank, is it newer or an old original tank? I had this issue and it took me a long time to find out my tank was seeping a small amount of gas out at the base of the filler neck and running along the outside of the tank on top of the pinch weld area and evaporating. It was a pain to find because a small leak will evaporate before dripping and puddling up. After a while pump gas will dry and show up as yellowish stain, just be careful if its kept in a garage with a gas fired hot water tank.

Two things. Don't park the car in the garage if you have any type of gas appliance near by water heater, dryer etc. Do you have any aftermarket fuel line on the car?

It was restored about 5 years ago, but I am not sure if the guy that did the work reused the old tank or not. I guess I'll just have to go over the whole car from front to back. I'll have to see if I can smell out the source somehow. Thanks to all for the suggestions on where to look.

My 72 Cheyenne (QJet) had a similar condition. There are 2 large (perhaps 3/8" dia) plugs on the bottom side of the carb that apparently were allowing leakage of the bowl into the intake. After I drove the truck, the garage would stink for 3 days and the wife was cranky. After that was fixed, the smell went away...and truck started much easier, with less plug fouling (duh). Maybe you have a simialr situation.

If you take the carb off and raise it above the table (with butcher paper or shopping bag paper underneath), you may see some dripping spots. Even put dye into the gas bowl and look for seepage. It would be an easy enough check.

I had the same on my smallblock, until i saw that it sometimes spit's out a lil bit fuel from the "wrong" side of the fuel pump, the "upper half" if you want. There are two small factory made holes in my fuel pump, when i shut it of, start it or put it in a front end down angle it will leak i little bit.
