Has anyone done a T-56 Install in a Chevelle or EL Camino w/ a big block? What problems are involved? Who makes an adapter or will a small block bell housing work? I'm aware of need for black box to connect speedometer, but are there any other problems.

i haven't done it but i know a fella that did. he said he'd never do it again, had to fabricate EVERYTHING almost, and it was hell. he finally got it going after a lot of trouble, i'd love to have one but will wait for a direct bolt replacement to replace my munci. or a kit that makes it ez.

I've dreamt about putting one in, that's about as far as i got after i saw the price tag. I think i'm with chev-hell on the waiting for a bolt in. Let me know if you do make the swap.

You can buy a retrofit T-56 box from several GM dealers. This T-565 trans is made to retrofit the T-5 used in 83 to 92 Camaros/ Firebirds. it comes with an adapter plate to bolt it to a standard bellhousing and has a longer input shaft for use with a standard flywheel and clutch assembly with 26 splines. It costs $2200 + shipping from Jim Pace Parts.

The Takout from a late model camaro/ firebird is a lot of work, and you need to use and adapt the late model hydraulic actuated - pull style clutch assembly and need a special flywheel and clutch, which are very costly.

I put one my '70 SS (the car is featured in Super Chevy Feb 2000) and it's the best thing I've ever done. Using a OEM Camaro box is by no means a bolt in, but worth the effort. There have been several articles on this. If it's going to see some abuse, make sure you get the one w/ the 2.66 first and .50 sixth gears. These are strong transmissions.(conservative 450 #-ft). I run a 4.56 gear now and can cruise 80mph all day.Wonderful!

Do you have any good links for a install? I picked up a t-56 out of an LT-1 car that I am planning to bolt to a 502. Any and all help would be great.

Take a look farther down the main forum page and do a search in the transmission forum. Plenty of reading to get you started. This thread you replied to is 7 YEARS OLD!

Well, I guess using the serach function when asking questions is good, even if it really digs into the past....

In any case, take a look at thirdgen.org in the drivetrain forum. The swap is discussed in a level of detail that should answer any question you have. About the only possible difference between a 502 and anything else, is the part # of the flywheel you might have to use; everything else is the same.

Also try protouring.com and do a search.there is alot of info on there also. i searched it a little bit and you can just get an LS1 t56 by the adapter that summit sells and you have to use a extended pilot bearing and it will bolt to the regular scatter shield.
