: cant get the oil pan and timing cover holes to align
71 chevy Jun 13th, 08, 10:42 AM can someone advise?
everything else buttoned perfectly except these two. one side the timing chain is blocking half the hole so no bueno, on the other side its just off to the side a tad.
can I use a rubber mallet to gently persuade it?
anyy suggestions will be appreciated.

Half of what hole ?
What engine is this?
Dean Jun 13th, 08, 3:01 PM Did you remove the first four oil pan bolts and lower the front of the pan a little?
what is "bueno" ?
Mike Jun 13th, 08, 3:02 PM All right or OK.
Tom Mobley Jun 13th, 08, 3:16 PM bueno is Mexican/Spanish for "good". pronounced like way-no.
is this a big-block? you talking about the bolts that go in from the bottom, though the pan and into the timing cover? or what?
71 chevy Jun 13th, 08, 4:41 PM yessirs, a big block. I got all the bolts to go except the two that go thru both the pan and the timing cover.
Tom Mobley Jun 13th, 08, 5:13 PM is the timing cover snugged up against the block? using a gear drive or anything that might keep it from seating on the face of the block?
stock pan and cover or aftermarket pieces?
are there dowels that locate the cover?

That's the way it is designed. 5/16 are for the pan to block, and the 1/4 are for the two corner bolts on the front cover. I put my pan and front cover on yesterday and all lined up fine, but then again I used stock pan and cover. The aftermarket stuff may be misdrilled. Did the front cover go on easy or did you have to use the bolts to "draw" it on?

oh,did not know about the corner bolts. so only two bolts are 1/4, cos the back two went on without effort, and the kit did not have the two 1/4 bolts.
the timing cover went on fine. thanks. I'll get a couple of 1/4 bolts.
