For those of you who don't know, the Crane XR-i is a points to electronic conversion. Installs in minutes. I posted my review in this forum last week.
So the 6AL arrived Friday, but I was in Baton Rouge moving all my shop tools, lawn equipment, etc.
I installed it this morning. The entire install took about 25 minutes, including mounting on the inner fender. The wiring is exactly as MSD's diagram for a Pertronix Ignitor.
ALL the issues with the XR-i went away. I now have instantaneous starting, a smoother idle, and powerful sparks. I increased the gap to .045, just like with the HEI, and it works great. I'm gonna try .050 gaps next.
The tach works perfectly without MSD's recommended tach adapter for my VDO tach.
I tested the limiter with the 3000 rpm module. When the tach hits 3000, it drops it out as promised. Of course, I'm running it with the 6000 module.
My old SunPro timing light still works flawlessly.
I definitely don't regret getting this unit.
I'm setting up my HEI distributor to work with it for testing and so I'll have a spare in case something fails.
I'm also gonna test it with a Mallory Unilite conversion.
