: Alternator fan hitting alt brackets

I have a 70 chevelle, 396BB that I am trying to put the finishing touches on and went to install my alternator. The alt fan (the one on the actual alternator behind the pulley) is hitting the alt brackets. Can someone post some pics to ensure I am mounting this correct. Also, if I could have someone measure their alt fan (it appears mine is too big), but I purchased on alternator that is "supposed" to be correct. So if I can get pics, fan measurements, or any other input from others I would greatly appreciate it. IF the fan is the wrong size, can just the fan be purchased to fit my application

It may be missing a washer on the back side of the fan to space it out a little.

Post a picture of you're bracket mounted on engine. Sounds like you need a flat washer or two under the bracket at the manifold. Alt. fan measures 5 7/16.

Dito on the 5 7/16 Here's a couple of pictures also.

O, the fan measures 5 7/16 so that's not the issue. Micky indicated that I may be missing a spacer behind the fan. How far does the fan stick out from the alt (the gap right behind the fan to the alt)? My brackets appear to be mounted the same as the pics here, and there is 2 washers where the upper bracket mounts to the manifold.

I had the same issue, I think it's the fan - not a missing washer, etc. My fan would nick the bracket once I got above 2000 rpm or so and it started to flex.

Mine was a Powermaster alternator. I just ground about 1/8" off the bracket where it hit.

try a shorter belt to put your alt in the middle of your bracket

This is a common problem, especially with a repro upper bracket. It's a simple fix. When you pull the alt back to tighten the belt, you also have to push the upper bracket up a bit just before you tighten the adjuster bolt. That will pull the fan away from the bracket and hold it there, one the bolt is tight. If it still hits, you could grind some steel off the bracket, where it hits the fan, then repaint it.
