Looking at buying a 69 chevelle SS that has the 72# stamped on the cowl tag. He does not have the build sheet to prove its a real SS but he claims that only the SS cars were painted this orange from the factory. Is this true or were some malibu cars also painted this orange?

Certainly were 69 Chevelles painted Monaco Orange other than SS models, primarily COPO 427's and other Fleet orders. However, the main difference between those cars and an SS car is they would have "-- --" as the paint code on the trim tag, not "72".

you must carefull there are companys that will change paint codes on trim tags (datatags.com or trimtags.com) thats why this whole hobby sucks, you have car restoration places claiming they have a numbers matching car, when allthey did is build a car (around)a build sheet and claim its a correct car, bullcrap, i wish that gm historical services would release the original paperwork for all their us built chevelles (instead of telling everyone the papers were destroyed in a fire)
