Hi all

Im having a hell of a time picking the right cam for my car, I'm looking for something that is going to give me good all around power and be able to run my vacume acc. This is going to be in a street car that I will only be taking to the track once in awhile. Crane suggested their powermax 134241 intake dur 226 ex. 236, with a lift of 534/553. I'm wondering if this will be too much cam for a street car? will I lose alot of low end? Heres my set up

402BB .60 over
1063 closed heads
appx 9.5 to 1 comp
Turbo 400
Demon 750 Vac sec
3.31 rear
stock tires

Thanks for your help, I'm pulling my hair out

Had the same cam in my 402 before I got my 540 I liked it. Thought it sounds good nice torque and hp cam makes good lower end power gives you something around 420 hp and 4xx tq enough to spin tires

since it lists this cam as having a fair idle, will it affect my brakes? I just had this entire motor rebuilt along with the heads, I just want to choose the right cam first.

You should be fine. Make sure that cam goes in 4 degrees advanced ( or more) as per their recommendation.

are you going to be running any kind of a stall?

I'm running a 2200 stall, I just want to get the most out of my car. Before I called crane I was thinking I need a smaller cam, I was kinda surprised in what he told me. Anybody have a suggestions on a cam for me?

Steves71,

I went with the smaller Crane Powermax 278/290 for my street 396 with the wide 114 LSA.
This is an excellent street cam and I love it. :D

You could also consider the even smaller 272 Crane with a 112 LSA, a very good street cam for 396/402 BB's, which would provide plenty of engine vacuum.

Steves71,

What I have used for years is the Lunati 302A4LUN, 272/272 at the seat, 217/217 at .050, .515/.515 valve lift, and 112 LSA. In 454s it pulls 21-22" vacuum, and has power from idle(about 600) to about 5500, with peak about 5000.
The next one larger is the 302A5LUN, 276/276 at the seat, 221/221 at .050, .515/.515 valve lift and 110 LSA. It has a rougher idle, but still pulls from idle to about 5800, with more upper-RPM power.
Both cams would work with your 2000 SS converter. The 302A4 gives good mileage increases in 454 duallies when towing a race-car trailer.
