Ok guys I posted here a few weeks ago looking for help. I know a few more details about my engine, heads and what gears I have as of right now. I am really unsure of what cam to get and need some ideas based off what I am gonna be runnin. I want to try and get close to 400 hp, somewhat lopey idle, probably wont see the other side of 6000 rpm and decent street driving(I know askin alot). Here are the specs:
396 bored .60 over
stock cast crank and rods
looking at using cast pistons and trying for 9.5 total compression.
oval port heads with 109 cc. numbers are 3933148
lookin at the performer 2-0 intake and holley 3310
400t
307 gears as of right now. could change though.
seriously lookin at the comp cams 270 magnum for camshaft. please give me some feedback and ideas cause im stressin out on this. :D

I am no expert, so be sure to get other advice on this.... Those heads list on Mortec as:
3933148....69-84...oval...OPEN...'69 396/265hp, 366T, 427T, 112cc chamber
Besides the truck apps, these were used on the 396 2bbl Impala/Caprices. Not a bad head, but will need a bit of a dome (I think more than stock) to get your desired compression level.
While you could likely put bigger valves in for a power adder, I have read here that you might be careful that you don't cutinto a jacket and may have to end up fly cutting pistons etc. Under 427cid, I think you might prefer to seek out a closed chamber head for your goals. JMO.

As I said in the other post...measure those chambers. My set has HUGE chambers. Bigger than big. Larger than life. 112 cc? No, start thinking 121 and up.

U may want to try to find a set of old closed chamber heads, much easier to make compresion with, especially with the generic cast pistons that has the smaller than stock domes and both sides of dome cut for valve clearance, casting #'s to look for are last 3#'s 206,702,820,390,215,063, or 290 there 96cc to 101cc

ya i know mortec list em as 112cc but my engine builder looked em up in a book and it said 109cc. wonder if its a misprint, still thats not much difference. i would really like to use these since thats all i have and am on a tight budget. for conversation sake how would you guys build it if that was all you had?

those heads look big guys but you fail to under stand that the chambers are shallow.......i have those heads and they measured out to 108cc with new large valves.........they are not like the 120+ cc heads like some of you think........if you compare them to the well known 049 heads which are 122cc then you will see why the 148 heads are only 112 or less........
i would use those heads and look into the decent priced kb pistons 1600's they are around 260 bucks and would give ya decent compression.........
