Wife's temp is going up with the thermometer...so I need to find a new window AC unit. Who has what and how do you like it? Is it fairly quiet? Cost? Where did you get it? TIA for any and all inputs. I hate buying this kind of stuff because I always feel like I get "hosed" no matter what I do!

Duke,

Best thing to do is to go and here them run. I bought 2 units 15 yrs ago and even those were very quiet, especially if it will be in the bedroom. They are really not that expensive anymore.

As of a few years ago the 2 I bought are still going and the original 1 from the house takes care of the garage now 17+ yrs old

The one I have works, but is loud. I hope to get central air next year...maybe.

Just make sure you don't overload (size right). I find a dehumdifier working in concert is helpful - I can have the house only a degree or two cooler than outside but with the reduced humidity it feels much better.

Last one I bought was a Sears. Seemed to work fine - until.......

My brother-in-law tried to help and decided to remove it himself just before winter -- from inside the house. He didn't realize the weight is in the back and just lifted the window that was holding it in place. Immediately fell 2 stories to the yard! - but at least it didn't take out the aluminum siding on the way down. Needless to say, it never recovered.

We have central air, now.

Andy,

I guess you had plenty of "air" when the unit left the window! Ouch!! What is it they say about the sudden stop at the bottom??

Scott,

Just the kind of info. I need...thanks!!

Cooler here today...some t-storms this AM. Hopefully I can get something in place before the temp rebounds. I'm hearing rumbles about central air but this old house prob. won't accomodate such niceties. Oh hell, burn it down and start over, right! Don't say that too loud.

Is that bad? The hotter my wife is, the more I like it! :)

Keith, ol buddy, my wife has hit that magic stage called menopause and when she is hot, it doesn't mean what it used to, unfortunately!
