: 10 bolt in a 327 car
Chuck Jun 8th, 08, 4:35 PM I am looking at a 65 Malibu SS with a 250 horse 327, Powerglide and a 10 bolt. The car is supposed to be numbers matching with a protecto plate.
Didn't all 65 Chevelles with 327s come with a 12 bolt? This is a Fremont car.
Thanks
Chuck
As the protecto plate is available ,what does it show for the rear code?
Believe the 12 bolt was the HD rear option.
Chuck Jun 8th, 08, 5:10 PM That's what I am trying to confirm, Mike. I was told that ALL 65 SS cars with a 327 came with a 12 bolt, not as an option. The car I am looking at is a 327 / 10 bolt. It that a fact that all 327 cars were 12 bolts???
Thanks
Chuck
68KMENO Jun 8th, 08, 5:22 PM nope they didn't there was a shortage of 12 bolts & I've seen a number that came with a 10 bolt in 65 !!
as a general rule YES it should have a 12 bolt But.....I believe a strike at gm had them coming up short ...
what ever the reason ..... it is possible for it to have a 10 bolt from the factory in 65 !!
Chuck Jun 8th, 08, 5:45 PM OK, great! Thanks for the help. I assume it was a 307 or 308 rear end so I could put 3.55:1 gears in it without a change of rear ends (3 series).
From a numbers matching point of view, is it a big deal that the car has a 10 bolt instead of a 12 bolt?
Thanks Mark
Chuck
rbwjr325 Jun 8th, 08, 5:50 PM No not in that car.My neighbor has the same numbs. matgh. car,10 bolt. Very Nice...W.T.F. is wrong with a 10 bolt anyways? Axels are cheap.
Chuck ,whats the axle code?
68KMENO Jun 8th, 08, 5:58 PM mike has a valid Point ....
on the bottom line of the P.O.P. the end number of the first set whats it say ??
3.08 10 peg leg = CA
Chuck Jun 8th, 08, 6:52 PM OK, thanks guys. I don't know the code but I will find out if I pursue the car. I don't have any problem with the 10 bolt, expecially behind a small block 327 making, at the most, 300 HP. I just wanted to be sure that from a numbers matching point of view a 10 bolt would not be a problem in the future if I try to sell the car. I gues that if it CAME in the car, problem ended.
Thanks
Chuck
DaleM Jun 8th, 08, 7:24 PM According to the published power team combinations, the 327/250 should have a 12-bolt with 3.07 gears for a manual transmission and 2.73 for automatic, the 327/300 should have 3.31 for manual and 3.07 for automatic, and the L79 got 3.31 (no automatic). All show 3.73's optional. The 10-bolt rear end is shown for the 2 6-cyl and 2 283 engines.
Without something like the POP to 'prove' it came with a 10-bolt, it might be a harder sell down the road as a 'numbers matching' car. Then again, without the POP, there wouldn't be a numbers to match, only dates that fit.
Chuck Jun 8th, 08, 7:45 PM Thanks Dale. It has a POP so I will try to confirm.

Chuck Jun 8th, 08, 10:14 PM Is there a document that shows how to decode a protecto plate? I will be checking a car on tuesday but I don't have posession of the POP right now so I have to do it on the spot. I'd like to take this info with me to be sure everything is correct.
Where do I find this document?
Thanks
Chuck

Chuck Jun 9th, 08, 12:25 AM Thanks Guys!!
Dale you are a genius. Is there anything you don't know? LOL
Thanks again everyone.

DaleM Jun 9th, 08, 12:50 AM You're too kind. :D I just read a lot of stuff and try to figure out who is right and who is wrong. I do know that POP's (like build sheets) vary from plant to plant in some respects, sometimes even within the same plant and year. People are kind enough to send me data for research and it certainly points out differences.
