I have heard this can be done. Just want the 411 on it. I know the lobes on a Hyd cam are not as aggressive as the solids. 284 HYD with 230 at .050 has a 26 degree ramp. Where a solid with the same 284 could be 246 at .050 would have a 19 degree ramp. So if i had a 284 Hyd cam with 230 at .050 and a lift of .480 what would you set the lash at to run solid lifters. Plus i have 1.6 rockers on it to which will give him .512 lift. The cam has a ICL of 106 and a LCA of 110. This is in a buddy of mine's motor and he asked me and i told him i had seen it some where and would try to find out. This will be in a 6 inch rod 10.5 to 1 compresssion .060 over 350 with a set of port and polished 461 Gm heads. Rpm intake and 750 DP. thanks guy for any help i can get.

I am no expert and hopefully someone will chime in. I do know that the take up ramps on a hydraulic cam are MORE aggressive then on a solid cam. The solid roller cams have less aggressive take up ramps in order to gently take up the lash.

Somebody runs solid rollers on a hy-roller cam around here by tight-lashing it!! And I do mean tight!!
Maybe he will chime in here??

OK, I wonder what the difference in performance would be comepaired to a regular Solid cam. This was a custom cam that cost him $147.95 and he then wanted a solid cam. But did not what to get another cam, a buddy of his said that BACK IN THE DAYS that HYD lifters they had been running where having problems so they just put solids on the hyd cam. He also told him that soidum valves where the best valves to run and 3/4 cams was the best street cams and he run 11 second 1/4 mile with a 11 to 1, 327 chevy with a FULL cam, ram horn exhast and a big heavy car. So, you know what i mean. Thanks guys

pdq67 We lash our hybrid cam setup, Hyd roller cam/Solid roller lifters at about .0015 cold,
after 1500 miles or so I checked the lash and it was spot on.
Doing a head change currently and after looking at the exh valves I`ll set them at .004 or so just to make sure the exh valves don`t get too warm.

Hubba,
Yes, there are sodium filled valves, I think all big ford 391 truck motors and such used to run them. The point being was that the sodium metal would melt and splash from one end of the valve to the other to help cool it.. BUT sometimes the hollow stems and heads came apart!!
As for the old 3/4 cam's, yes, they were very good as big as you could go cams for street motors way back then... A full race cam AND a full boogy high compression 337", 327 SB was and still is a force to be recconded with!!
And the old 2.5" outlet diameter Vette/Duece ramshorn exhaust manifolds were the biggest stock ones that came on a SB that could run them. I say it this way b/c most cars front crossmembers were in the way b/c they dumped straight down!!
As far as putting regular solids on a regular hy- cam, in a word, NO!!! Roller cams, yes.... Regular cams, NO, imho....
BUT I have to concur to ANYBODY that has done it and made it work...

Try Speed Pro 817R hyd lifters (note the "R"). They are set with .002" lash instead of preload. Gets rid of any lifter pumpup. Once a hyd lifter has oil pressure it acts just like a solid (try compressing a liquid, it can't be done). With the 817Rs, the plunger is always at the top of it's travel. There is a very solid cir-clip that holds them together. I go to 7000 on every shift with a hyd cam using these lifters. I agree with PDQ about using solids on a hydraulic cam, it shouldn't be done. The lash ramps just aren't there.
