I have a 454 std. bore 73' year casting. Trying to aim for daily driving use and 2 track days a year. No Nitrous/boost intended.

454 +.030 over with decently priced pistons, hypers or forged. 9.1 comp.
stock rods/crank with ARP bolts all around.
049 heads "mildly" home ported, larger valves installed.
Elgin cam 238/248 .050 .540/540 lift 1.7 full rollers on a 114 LSA
Edlebrock RPM intake with my Holley 4bbl TBI EFI 900cfm kit on top
1-7/8" Headers, 3" exhaust into x-pipe hooker mufflers into 3" tails.

Looking for easy low 12's decent milage and it can be ran on 87 crap cali gas when ever. my trans/gears will stay the same.
ATI built TH-350,ATI 10" 2800-3000 stall,12 Bolt 3.73 wtih posi

Anyone have similar combo and have advice on changes or even how it will run. Any help or feedback would be helpfull. This is a semi budget build, nothing fancy or expensive. Thanks

Chris (Mr. 4-Speed) has buddy with a very close build running 13's with a 3.08 open rear-end. Due to the wide LSA you could up the compression with no worries.

im running at the moment a 454 with the kinda set up you have in mind with little more cam.

computer caculators say somewhere around 425 to the ground but its just approx.

here is my set up.

454 .060 over
cast crank
factory rods
arp studs and bolts where needed
windage tray
kb pistons provides 10.2 to 1 compression
049 heads that i have ported with my best efferts and i installed 2.19/1.88 valves
eddy rpm intake
3310-2 holley 750cfm vacuum secondary carb with 72/80 jets
eddy rpm cam 240/246 @ .050"
summit cheapo headers and a 2 1/2" exhaust system (not the best for sure)
Full Boar stainless steel mufflers with 2 1/4" tail pipes
th350 tranny with a TCI 10" convertor ( brake stalls about 3200 but flash stall much higher)
4.10 gears
245/60-15 uniroyals all the way around for tread
about 4100lbs maybe alittle more but shouldnt be over 4200lbs

2 weeks after i put the engine in it ran 12.50 at 109 or so with no cool down straight off the highway and no tune at all. the week before it had ran some low 13's because of valve float problems ( would not rev past 5000 rpms or so) and i replaced the springs. then went back to the track

same day i ran three runs in the mid 12's with street tires didnt hook well - i think all my 60 ft times was in the 2.10 range. i ran some old slicks i had and uncorked the headers and turn a 12.12 @ 112 mph with some sloppy 1.70's 60 ft times- video was showing i was spinning out of the hole about 10 ft with the old slicks

6500 rpms was my shift point pulled really good to that rpm.

it seems i have plenty of vacuum for my disk brakes up front drums in the rear.

YUP, Chris's bud has 8:1, 3.07 gears, and has run low 13s.....
An outing a few weeks back was inconclusive...they were talking gear swap
I think Chris is about due to update....

I'll have 8.8:1 with stock 1978 pistons and 1968 #063 101cc heads..stock valves and ports, 3 angle VJ from a respected shop
Perf 2-O intake, 3310-2 Eddy (modified with rear metering block), 1 3/4 headers
now have 282/282* adv 226/226* @ .050" .533/.533" lift 108 LSA
CRN 10307 282-H08

3.42, posi, th350, 2500 stall
looking for high 12s when the traction goodies are bolted on and DRs hook.
I am thinking the 454 will tame this cam into a pussycat at idle and I'll have the midrange from hell...all the excitement done by 5200 rpm

Thanks guys, I was thinking about the price of heads v.s. cleaning up the 049's all together. The good thing is i already have the 049's. I might have to consider Dart 308 rec heads and a next size up cam. This budget stuff is hard to keep budget when NEW parts cost almost as much as refurbished stuff!!!!

Build what you have, it's a good set up, you could always add NOS for more fun.

yea, might have just run what i've got. Im gonna upstep the cam but keep the internals stock for the budget sake. Might dig at the swap meets for
some parts and hit up some old pals for BBC parts.

Mike- Mine is not too far off.

Mark IV block now a 468
702 oval ports ported and nicely massaged
9.25- 9.50 comp
232/232, 578/578 110LSA Hyd Roller
Was running Team G single but have switched to an RPM
850 Quickfuel
1 7/8 hookers into 2 1/2 pipes...yes, they're only 2 1/2"
M-20 and 3:31's.

See below for best time. Oh ya, I drove 75 miles to the track and ran 13 runs on 87 octane and still had a 1/4 tank left...

Frank,
Don't let the cat out of the bag! People may eventually catch on that you can run all day with a 454 and street gears....

My combo started out as a replacement LS-6. I drive on weekends and have been to the track a few times compression is 10.2 the rest is in the sig.

If I keep the hype up, my 3:31's might be worth something.

ThanksI dont see any problem with the low 12s, I wouldnt use that cam, when 100.00 will get you the right cam. We build a similar engine we sell that makes 570 hp 580 pounds of torque, with 9.2 comp, 550 550 230 cam, but the 049 heads do have extensive porting that would be hard to duplicate, but I dont know about the 87 octane gas, that probably wouldnt work with my combination, on the cam, first I would worry about the quality of the cam (potential for goin flat), but also I think its to big. good luck.
