Does anyone know if I could do anything with a set of L2287F pistons in my 402.

I have 3993820 heads......can I have the pistons "fly cut" to relieve the dome and avoid impact with the head and maybe get compression down a bit?

If I go to a machine shop and tell them what I wan will they look at me like I'm stupid graemlins/hurray.gif

I'm real green with thei big block stuff and trying to figure it out.

Thanks for any advice, Kevin

IF any work is required on them it would probably be minor. Those are for a 65-69 396-375 with closed chamber ALUM heads. I use L2242F, which are for 65-69 396-375 with closed chamber IRON heads, with #820 open chamber heads and no pistons mods required. I did have the intake side flycut .040 on the last rebuild because the valve reliefs aren't very deep. The piston you have and #820 heads will yield a CR in the neighborhood of 10.0-1, depending on deck height, gasket thickness, etc. I have 10.1-1 with a small solid cam (Lunati/UD L-78 replacement cam) and it works fine with 93 octane. I had larger valves put in the heads which required some reliefs ground into the 396 block. That lowered the CR a smidge.

Von- can you post your cam specs for me? Check out the Age Old Question post. I just asked this question there about valve reliefs and lift, etc.

I was using an L-78 copy, 242/242 dur @ .050, .520/.520 lift minus .024/.028 lash, 114 LSA. Now have UD-Lunati 238/238 dur @.050, .550/.550 lft minus .022/.022 lash, 112 LSA. Both will clear the L-78 pistons without flycutting but it can be tight with zero deck, milled heads, etc.
