The dude has been doing a lot of reading here lately, and he is convinced that you know your stuff!! I am putting together a motor for my Chevelle that is going to be used 95% as a drag car. I have got everything together and I am ready to start putting the motor together, I was just hoping to get some opinions on what cam to use. The specs of the car and motor are:

71 chevelle (lightened with fiberglass hood, bumpers, and minimal interior)
12 bolt posi rear with 4.11's
electric fan, fuel pump, and water pump
TCI th400 competition trans with full manual valve body and reverse pattern shifter
TCI streetfighter converter (approx 3000 to 3500 stall)
454 bored .30 over
10.1 forged pistons
781 oval port heads with manley race flo valves and harland sharp 1.7 ratio roller rockers
Edelbrock Performer RPM intake
I have not purchased the carb yet, but I am leaning towards either a 4150 HP Holly or an Edelbrock thunder series.
I am also planning on adding a nitrous system in the future

For the cam, I would like to stick with either a hydraulic or solid lifter cam. I would be willing to look at a roller cam if you feel the performance difference would warrant the extra cost.

Thanks for the help!

since you're so patient, you can mull an amatuer's comments over. tongue.gif

You don't have enough compresion to run the 402A7UN ( 288/296) I'd opt for the 402A3LUN (276/284) which would make great cylinder pressure with a 10.2 motor, and likely run better ETs. You'd probably start out with 11.60s on a shakedown run is my guess.

By my **rough** reckoning, you gain around 50 hp or 10% with a solid roller. That should start you out at 11.40 ( w-a-g-!)and then you can tweak-n-tune into the 10s. You decide if its worth the additional $600 clams. the same 276/284 profile btw.

Even with the solid FT, you should do easy 10s on the bottle if everything else is in order.

Thanks for the input Gene... (and I know you are anything but an amatuer!) I have a few parts I was going to order from Summit, so I thought I would pick up the cam while I was at it, but I can't seem to get that part number to work.. Anybody have any idea how to find that part number (402A3LUN) at Summit??

THE DUDE, no defintely an amatuer, since autmomotive work doesnt pay my bills nor do I spend 1/2 my paycheck on a race car ( those guys are nearly pros!)...

Many of the Lunati grinds are new and Summitt may not stock them ...yet. You might need to go straight through Lunati.

Summit can get the cams but you have to call their tech line 800-230-3030.

You might try ordering a custom lunati cam, 50299, and put in the part number/grind number for the notes. Check the price difference and decide if you want to go through the hassle of ordering though summit. I think it took three days before summit and I figured out how to order my 502A4LUN108 that is a 502A4LUN ground on a 108 lobe seperation rather than the normal 110. Talk to UD Harold and make sure thats the cam you want.

Found it on Summits website, it is under part # 40213 for Lunati smile.gif

40213 is an older Lunati grind, not the 276/284 you're looking for. Least according to their website.

Gene, what would I do without ya... :D Maybe I should just take Sean's advice and call the tech line at Summit. Or on the other hand, I don't know too much about UDHarold, can I actually order a Lunati cam directly from him??
