: Diff between Star,Mega,Quicksilver
MonteMan454 Mar 23rd, 04, 3:46 PM Hello Guys,
I have been examining B&M'S shifers and I am wondering what the differences are between the StarShifter, MegaShifter and the Quicksilver?
They all seem very similar, all have rachet action features, switches, NHRA legal etc. Perhaps the only difference is the style? I have read a previous post and it seems like the StarShifter might not be as durable. Maybe the internal components of each are different maybe the Mega and Quick will last longer? I am looking for something that is well built and can take some abuse.
Thanks in advance,
drptop70ss Mar 23rd, 04, 4:19 PM I prefer the quicksilver because I dont like having to lift the trigger and I dont like the rubber boot that always distorts and cracks on the megashifter. I have not tried the star shifter, I am sure its the same guts with a different look.
GRN69CHV Mar 23rd, 04, 4:23 PM I just put a Quicksilver in mine. It has a real clean installed look - see it in a lot of street rods. Mine will be used with a bench seat. Works good and fits & looks nice.
mr 4 speed Mar 23rd, 04, 6:41 PM Another vote for the Quicksilver,..screw those mega/star shifters..lift this,pull that..bla,bla,bla..just more stuff to go wrong :D
I drove a friends 69 camaro that had a reverse pattern,manual valve body TH400 with a b&m star shifter..talk about drama
70ChevelleRagtop Mar 23rd, 04, 7:29 PM I had a Quicksilver in my old 71 Chevelle about 20 years ago and loved it. If I ever was looking for another shifter, a Quicksilver would be at the top of my list. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
MO_chevelle Mar 23rd, 04, 7:39 PM I have a megashifter and it functions like it is suppose too and I like it but I have never used a quicksilver. I agree with what everyone has said about the handle. You pick up the handle and you can pull it back too drive but you have too ratchet back too 2 and 1 then you can ratchet all the way to neutral but it has too be in drive too be able too pick up the handle and shift into park or reverse. It is complicated but once I got used too it I dont mind it.
MonteMan454 Mar 23rd, 04, 9:02 PM I was wondering about pulling the handle. Those plastic boots seem likely to tear as well.
I think I will just wait on a EBAY deal for a Quicksilver. They often come up as a complete unopened box unless someone knows one for sale.
Bob West Mar 23rd, 04, 10:24 PM I currently use a Megashifter,I've used a Starshifter and liked both of them. It aint that tricky to pull a handle up. I've never had the boot rip or crack. I think the Starshifter is for a forward pattern, and Megashifter will work with forward or reverse pattern. My son HAD a Hurst shifter that you had to pull the whole handle up, I didnt care for that and he didnt either,he switched to the Starshifter.
Cameano Mar 24th, 04, 12:36 AM I had a Star shifter in my old '69 Nova for a while, until one day when I was putting it into park and the handle broke off at the base, below the boot where I couldn't see it. graemlins/angry.gif I used to love my quick click, but they don't make them anymore. Full ratchet, reverse lockout. Ran it with a fwd pattern full manual th350, 3200 stall, with my 327 for a couple of years in the El Camino, back in the early 90's. Nobody ever asked to drive the car, bonus. :D I had a Quicksilver for a short while, didn't like it as much, it has a gate action for 1st to 3rd, if I remember right. You had to lift the trigger to get it to stop at the next gear, not fun when racing. Too busy.
cjlandry Mar 24th, 04, 5:32 AM I have a Quicksilver. Love it!
It's not much different from the others except that you lift the shifter to go from Park to Drive. Ratchet down one gear at a time to first, ratchet up one gear at a time to fourth.
Lift the handle to get back into reverse or park.
The only difference I know of is the lack of a trigger/lever to pull.
I like the looks of all of 'em, I just don't like the triggers. Personal preference.
70_FathomBlueMalibu Mar 24th, 04, 6:09 AM Easy answer. Get a B&M Pro Ratchet and be done with it. Full ratchet action, NHRA-approved and tough as nuts. Easy to use tho. No lift up this, that or "trigger" thingie. Just click, click, click. One part# is strictly for the GM Powerglide and the other is for 3 and 4 speeed automatics. I use it with my 700R-4. It also works with forward or reverse and manual or automatic valvebodies.
Comes with all the switches, hardware, 5 ft. Race cable....everything. $170 and probably one of the top 2 or 3 things I've done to my car. When I told my friends about it, they all said, "Man, that's for a race car. You don't need it."
Now when they see it in action they say, "Dude, that's for a race car. I GOTTA get me one of those!" graemlins/thumbsup.gif :D
Motor Martyr Mar 24th, 04, 11:27 AM The best shifter is a Turbo Action Cheetah, I've used B&M ratchet type (in a friends dodge), Hurst Quater stick and the B&M Pro Stick.
In my opinion, none of them compaired to the simplicity and ease of use of the Cheetah.
BowtieAaron Mar 24th, 04, 11:39 AM thanks for the tips guys, im actually looking into getting either a 1/4 stick or a pro stick for the velle, its got a glide in it too.
do you guys have pics of these shifters you mentioned in your car?

BTW, thats not a tear in the seat, the light must have reflected strangly, and made it appear that way.
knudsonm Mar 24th, 04, 12:56 PM I've used the z-gate,mega shifter, and Pro-stick. Personally I hate the ratchet type shifters for both street and strip. I like being able to get to the gear I want when I want it.
BowtieAaron Mar 24th, 04, 1:33 PM thats nice, thats the cheeta right? what does ur car run at the strip?

Motor Martyr Mar 24th, 04, 5:51 PM yeah, thats the turbo action.

BowtieAaron Mar 25th, 04, 1:08 PM sweet, haha i bet ur still faster than i am, damn 305 glide and 308's graemlins/sad.gif .. lool
