Big Thanks to Mike Lewis and Harold for helping me pick a cam for the 540, it pulls like freight train. Just wanted to thank all you guys for your suggestions, this site is awesome. I dont drive a chevelle but the BB experiance here at team chevelle is priceless.

I think theres more in it. The first run was 12.03 @120mph w/1.8 60 foot. The second run was 11.7 @ 122.1 mph w/1.77 60 foot. Unfortunatly the track was so crowded, I only got 2 runs in. I run a 4 speed convertible so its not the easiest set up to perfect a launch. Im amazed that 3 one hundredths at the 60 foot made an improvement of 3 tenths in ET. Man was I grinning ear to ear when I got to the end of that quarter, you can feel it when its good.

Thanks again Rich

What track?
What kind of car? Got any pics?
What trans and clutch combo?

Jim,

I run up at Island dragway. Its in the town of Great Meadows near Hackettstown. I will post the link to some pics of the car. Its a 1967 camaro convertible. I build my own gear boxes you will see a whole slew of them in my shop on the web shots. The one Im running in the car now is a muncie supercase w/mid plate/m22masero gears(2.56)first. The clutch is made by clutchmaster in California its there stage 3 with kevlar pucs on both sides. I toasted a centerforce dual friction after 6 passes and switched to the clutchmaster. It feels like it grabs better than the centerforce and drives nice on the street, no chatter. The pp is not super agressive either. And the CF toasting was before the cam change when I was running 116-117 mph. I still cant believe It picked up 5mph. Full moser 12 bolt w/4.11s.

Purs,
7.850 @ 90.1 mph
7.624 @ 92.67 mph

I think a low 1.6 60foot might get her near the 10s maybe low 11s. I have alot of trouble hooking although I run a heavy front wheel(ralleys with all the trim and t/a radials). Its pretty much full street trim. I havent tried a real slick yet. Im using the Hoosier QTPs. on 10inch ralleys.

Rich, I run at Island! I didn't see your car there this season though. (Although I didn't get out there much) Are you going again this year? I'll have to keep you in mind if I ever destroy my Muncie at the track.

Rich,
Congratulations!!

One suggestion, head to island on saturdays, sign up in Trophy mod and street ET.

Run both classes while tuning, i suggest this becuase you will be racing on a MUCH better track surface saturday then you will on sunday with all the street cars.

I wont be back at island until next season most likely, i'm heading to atco to race for the rest of the season starting in a few weeks.

EXCELLENT! Glad to hear of another streetable clutch, as opposed to CF dual. Havent toasted mine yet ( had a damn hard time shifting through it once while doing some hotlap runs), but man, a 1.80 ft!

Is teh Clutchmaster clutch priced much more than a Centerforce? Does it "hit" hard like some of the custom steel disc ones ( and break cases and gears!)?

They say Camaros are easier to hook up than Chevelles. My 427 ran in a 68 Camaro for a while, and it never hooked up good, and in L88 trim through a Muncie, it was just stupid, dangerous.. Seems to be holding decent on street slicks, so far, in a Chevelle with a stick. All's I wish, are runs like yours!

Brian,

Thanks and thanks again on the front spring selection, I think its helping, my son said the front end is coming up quicker. It feels like it is. Still getting about 2 rotations of the tire before it hooks. Perhaps I could get to atco some time to watch you race, how long does the race season go? I sure would like to visit another track, we dont get down south to often.

427L88,

The clutch was 400 bucks with a bearing, it has marcel spring and really dosent feel like it hits hard it just engauges and off you go. Its really not all that different from the CF. I think the friction material is better and they do alot of work in the pressure plate with changing leverage points to gain more clamping force and still retain a light pedal feel.
I dont know if this is the case with all clutch cars, but I found that with the killer torque these BBs make, I had to back down on the launch rpm. Im only coming out at 2800 rpm. One guy at the track told me, I needed to come out harder at 4500rpm. Like a fool I did it, and spun the tires for close to 300 feet. At that time I was running a 27x10.5x15. I run a 28x13.5x15 now, its the biggest tire QTP Icould fit in there.

Thanks Rich

Hi Rich,
Outstanding graemlins/thumbsup.gif
With that MPH there's low 11's hiding in there if you can hook it ;)

Onward towards the 10's,,,,,,,,,

67ragtp,

Did you coat your aluminum parts with something? The engine looks really good with the natural finish on the aluminum.

Rod,

No coating just raw aluminum. Ive had the motor apart so many times in the last 3 years changing cams and tinkering, so im always wiping down all the parts with high purity acetone or break clean, maybe thats what keeps it fresh looking. My family is going to put a lock on the hood for fear there might be an 8-71 in my winter plans. Just kidding, if you look at the 2nd page of the web shots I just finished a pro touring camaro chassis, I hope to stop taking the 540 apart and find a 67 shell to work on instead. I do love the look of freshly glass beaded alluminum. it does oxidize after a while, and it just dosent look the same when you coat it.

Thanks Rich

Rich, just viewed your pics on the website. What is going on in pics #21, 22 and 23?

Jim,
I presume your looking at the friction material burnt to the flywheel. Thats the result of 6 passes on a CF dual friction and it was a 12" set up. I use ceterforce flywheels there sfi and the quality is vey nice. The flywheel fits so damn tight over the crank that I need a puller to remove it. I was very proud of my homemade flywheel puller, not sure if alot of people have this same condition but I have a problem with taking out the hammer and beating the thing off. I thought about patenting the puller but Im sure someone has already done it(He He). It really works nice. I cant remember if that was the organic side or the kevlar side(I presume its kevlar I have my doubts) It started smelling more and more with the run 5 and 6. Thats when I got rid of it, for the clutchmaster unit.
