Would 2" headers work OK on a 454 HO?

Thats what I have right now - hate to get another set.

I use 1.75" tubes...picked up a little over the 2" I had.

The headers on my 454 are 1 7/8's. 2" primaries will be fine on that engine.

Don't get the 2". They should be used for 502 or larger engine. The 1 7/8" is just fine for the 454.
I have 2" Super comps and had clearance problems with 4 of the 8 spark plug wires hiting the header and Some dinging may be needed depending on year/make/model. Also I had to raise the engine maybe a 1/2" on the drivers side to get the header in and jack the car up about 36" or more. The passenger side installed OK.

He already has the 2" Hedmans, they were on the car when he got it with the 396. One of the reasons the 396 never ran well enough. That and others!

Vince, with the 454HO, 1-3/4" are probably better, but the 2" will still work. What's a few hundred more dollars right?

By the way, just to let everyone know - turns out Vince lives exactly 2 miles up the road - his '69 SS is as good looking in person (maybe better) than it is in print. With the new HO installed, that will be a really nice ride.

Just a divorce and no where to live :D

Hi Joe. I think they are 2" but if you measure at the flange they are 1 7/8. These headers neck-down at the flange - leading me to believe that they are larger than the measured 1 7/8.

An X-pipe will "band-aid" those 2" pipes at lower rpms.

Bob West, how much did you gain? I didn't think we had any back-to-back comparos of tube size.

I officially submit Vince for the "Dedicated Gear Head of the Year Award". House is in the middle of a makeover and the motor in the "weekend car" goes. Decisions. decisions. Park the car until the house is done or try to get both done at the same time - tough call. True to the cause - work on both feversishly.

Maybe a tenth Gene,,,was waaaaaaaaaay back when I got it down to 12.05...then went 11.97,then replaced a worn out distributor and got the Holley HP and went 11.78 twice. Then switched to drag radials and 3" pipes, cuz the 1/4 mile track told me to slow it down or put a rollbar in it and went 11.85 last July, and havent been able to duplicate that since, but most of that is due to the M/T Slicks and 60ft.,havent been able to break into the 1.6's since I made that slick swap, couldnt afford to just throw them away. They are gone now, going to most likely finish the year on drag radials unless they vary too much. I might have to break down and buy some new Hoosiers, but would rather wait til next spring rather than have them sit in the garage over the winter.

Vince g... hmmm that sounds familiar. I think I just bought your polished RPM manifold off E-bay. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
I'm hoping it will be a little more street friendly and maybe even pick me up a tenth over the Dart Oval port single plane I'm running now. Even if it doesn't it's going to look good at the car shows.

I improved my best ET by a tenth after going from 15 year old 1 7/8" BlackJack headers to 1 3/4" Hooker Super Comps.
This on an oval port 462 shifting at 6000.

Thnx Bob and Mark, just wondering what I might be "losing" with 2" on a 7000 rpm 440.

I had the opportunity to try two different size headers when my 540 was on the dyno last fall. Used the actual 2 1/8" Hooker Super Comps that are presently on the car and a friends set of 2 1/4" Hooker upswept dragster for a comparison.
Only difference between the two was the larger tubes shifted peak HP and TQ up around 400 rpm. No significant gains or losses.
