Is there a cheaper equivalent to these 7154-16 Comp Push rods, Im going to order them unless I find a similar 3/8" set.

Phil,

I have heard that the ball ends are not the way to go. It's even noted in Building Chevy Rat motors, as staying with the one piece push rods. I can't remember what RPM you plan on running, so maybe it doesn't matter. I know that summit has the one piece for the same price.
Are you keeping track of how much this engine is going to cost you, just curious?
I'm interested in hearing how this BB runs.

Fred.

RPM, Im not sure. Im not going to spin this thing too high, happy daily driving basically. As for Keeping track of what im spending, every cent! Much more than expected tongue.gif I am scared to look, included the cost of little tools, broken replaced sockets, fluids, paint, chemicals, and all the other little junk which sure adds up too! Im easily in over 3x what I had expected graemlins/beers.gif

Im going to run rock rockers if I can, or something similar to it. If I can run those pushrods and you have em' new still I'll take them. I figured to run these because the comp cams catelog suggests using them with the cam I went with. I did hear good things about the 1-piece rods but as long as I atleast upgrade to 3/8" which werent originally on these heads or engine, probably be fine.

comp. products sells them for 40 bucks 3/8" not sure about the rest of you but i have not yet toasted a set of stock style push rods in 13 years of hot rodding bbc's. weather it has been the 5/16, 3/8 or 7/16" size..for the most part i do run the 7/16" on everything anymore.....

Hey Dennis, You do or dont run the 7/16" Pushrods? I think I measured my guides at 5/16" These heads are 396-427 Large Ovals, the pushrods that came off my peanut ports (which came with my engine) fit these guides, Im not planning on re-using them though. What size pushrod goes in a 5/16 Guide? It's hard to even find a pushrod for BBC that isnt 3/8" I dont think id have a problem running something other than 3/8 I dont drive my engines tough or hit the track. Who knows. Im curious though, about the guide size.

Also, someone mentioned comp products with 3/8" pushrods for 40 bucks, is that someone similar to comp cams? Never heard of comp products....

I don't know if im blind or what but Ive checked all over this site and I can't find any push rods. Just 3/8" Guides. I asked before, still havent figured it out. Im just a bit confused and always have been on rocker arms and pushrod sizes. Like, do rockers only fit with specific size pushrods? The guides which came with my rebuilt heads measured 5/16" the pushrods which came with my engine (1990 ½ ton or 3/4) fit these guides perfectly. I checked them for straightness and they seem fine, im not into using old parts on this build but im tempted because this stuff checks out. Is length critical? Is it really worth tossing this stuff and just buying all new? I know theres some of you that go all out, and some that use stuff others don't approve of and it works perfectly... so basically im looking for good news. I dont know what to do!

Bud, If you are this lost on this stuff, do yourself a BIG favor and get someone who knows what they are doing to help you. You are heading for a very expensive boat anchor. I think you need more help than a internet board can offer, no offense intended, just trying to offer some reality. If I lived in CA I would help you personally.

I built my first big block, a 427 when I was 19 years old. I am almost 26 now. The 427 is long gone now. Don't cheap out. Valvetrain geometry is critical for engine durability. I grenaded my 427 using those cheap 40 comp pushrods. Now I have a 454. And a little bit more experiance. The 454 still runs graemlins/hurray.gif . Like sms said, get some help. Or save your money and have someone build it right.
