: Removing rust, cleaning, & painting steel rims?

Wondering the best method to recondition a set of old 66 steel rims. These rims were originaly painted black, then the outside was sprayed to match the body color.

Was thinking about media blasting and then power coat black. But that might show some imperfection on the outside. And then how would I get the body color to adhear good to the powder coating?

Someone suggested to prime with epoxy, then use a fill primer, then paint black, then spray the outside the body color. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I would do it just as it was sujusted to you. Forget the powder coating part of it.

I have found that media blasting does not remove heavy rust entirely. I had mine sand blasted and that seem to work the best. Media blasting seems to work well on sheet metal parts so you don't warp it, but it still leaves dark spots in the metal where the rust was at times.

Thanks everyone. Someone has also suggested to put the wheel in a plastic garbage can with about 6 gals of muratic acid and let it sit for about 8 hours. Has anyone tied that?

Spot on!

Blast with sand first, yes.

A buddy of mine has used the muratic acid, with good results, on parts other than wheels!

If you do all that you'll be good for sure.

Can you get epoxy primer in the rattle cans? Has anyone tried the Eastwood "Rust Encapsulator" over bare metal or over their "Rust Converter"? The Rust Encapsulator is suppose to both seal and encapsulates and for use under lacquer, enamel, and urethane.

Andy69 (Richard) shared this with me the other day when I asked about a Rust Converter. He was correct, I went back and sanded down the area where I had applied some and the rust was just under the surface.

"Skip the rust converter. It really does what is says - it converts iron oxide to iron phosphate. The trouble is, it only does it to the top layer, leaving rust underneath".
