Tom (mc71454) has a 540 with 3.42's and runs 10.7X's
What are your performance goals? Your ET goals will dicate what you ultimately need for gear.

Based on the info you have provided i would use a 3.73 with a 3000 converter and 3.42's with a 4000 converter for strip performance. I was about .3 slower with a 3000 converter.

But it really depends on All the other components of your combination. Please list them For sure, I would replace that 10-bolt before going to anything numerically higher than a 3.08.

With the torque and mph a 540 should generate not alot of gear should be required. I would agree anywhere from a 3.42-3.73 should work well. Unless your 540 is really stout it probably peaks at 6000 or less.
