First off Matt welcome to the site. I notice the add said $8000, but maybe you have talked to him and he is willing to come down. Most 68 SS Chevelle's I have seen run in the mid $20,000 range and up if the are in good shape. I have seen some clones that are done very well go for more then you are talking about paying for this car. I don't know many 21 year olds who have an extra 20,000 plus sitting around burning a hole in their pocket. It really come down to can you enjoy the car if it is not a SS car. Most people who have SS car don't drive them much, especially if they are number matching. Having a car that I can enjoy and drive is why I own a Chevelle. It's easy to drop alot of money in these cars if you do any type of restoration.
Good luck on your quest to own a Chevelle.

FWIW, to look at it from this point of view, an SS car only came with different mechanical and a few trim pieces thast Malibus did not. They are still the same physical car. You can get all the pieces you need to make it look like what you want. There's nothing wrong with a nice Malibu

Welcome to the site Matt. Please try to use the proper technical form (like what is it worth for this question). It helps us keep things organized for future reference. Thanks. Good Luck :)

you are right... i do not have 20000 sitting around... thats why i found this car for 7000 (i talked him down) in the pictures...do you think its worth 7000 to get that car and start a lifetime project of making it a amazing car? or do i wait and save for a few years and get a nicer ss?

I agree, these cars SS or not seem to keep going up in price. If the car is a solid car then you have a good base to build the kind of car you want. Most of us started some place and have traded up along the way. Also asking this question in the what is it worth form might get you an answer on the value of the car.

Hello and welcome Matt. Have you seen the car in person? That is the first thing to learn about buying a car, especially an old car.

I would definitely not buy "sight unseen". Alot can be hidden in those far off shots. IMO, I would ask for better pics. If it's close enough to drive there and see in person, take the time to inspect it before you commit. And just MO but $7000 seems kinda low for a 68, "in good condition" ... granted drive train, etc can come cheap and way down the road but it could have swiss cheese for floors~ poorly done skins, etc. Paint & bodywork~ panel replacement etc, is boo-koo dollas.

But hey!! If it ends up being something you want and the price is right, jump on it and make your own. Just make an informed purchase so you ain't kickin yourself in the arse later.

Oh and WELCOME!!!

Hey there Matt, you've found THE place to talk Chevelles. I just joined up here after I picked up my 1969 El Camino. I found mine on CraigsList, too. Pictures on that site are usually very low grade. I went down and checked out the El Camino and took it for a drive before I made up my mind and paid $2000. I think I got a helluva deal for that money!
You definitely need to check it out with someone that knows what to look for. $7000 may or may not be a good deal depending on mechanical condition and the shape the body and interior is in.
Mine is getting a new interior and the body work will involve some patch panels and a full repaint back to the Azure turquoise. I'm making mine into a phantom SS 350. It will be what I want it to be. Yes it will have badges but they will be SS 350 emblems. I'm putting an overdrive in it and I'm going to install my Pioneer Premiere XM satellite radio in the dash.
I'm very excited to get this one looking great again.
