: Flame thrower exhaust

I was thinking today what would be more intimidating on the road than a big block Chevelle that shoots flames from the exhaust. Does anyone have the flamethower exhaust? How do you like it, and how does it work?

I was told that you have an extra spark plug in the exhaust and a fuel line...race cars have it because they have short unrestricted exhaust systems and go into a rich condition when they let off the throttle in the turns...the extreme heat in the headers from running lean at high rpm for the race ignites the fuel in the rich condition and you get the flames shooting out around the turn

I have an idea of how it works... there is 1 spark plug & 1 coil per tailpipe. You rev up then hit a switch that blocks off spark from entering the coil. Unburned fuel exits the combustion chamber and is burned by the inserted spark plug (ignited by the same switch)

If you have an ignition kill switch turn it off when your rpms get up around 4000+ and while the ignition is off pump the gas and the accelerator pump will do the work. then simaltaneosly turn the car back on and hit the flame thrower switch. the setup worked better in my buddies 72 ford 250 than my car because he has a four speed and I have an auto. we ran his flames in gear rolling because it took longer to slow down the motor. we found that if the exhaust was on as the motor was dying it shot a smaller sorta steady flame and when we flipped the switch on and off it was a little bit bigger. Be careful though we got a $150 ticket so we figured we'd had enough of that. it was pretty cool to try though. I have a picture of somebodys T-bucket shooting some mad flames out hopefully they will chime in. good luck! graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Just helped a friend of mine install one in a guys cars he was building. It had an "ON"-"OFF"-"ON" switch wired into the power for the distributor. When you wanted to shoot flames, you flipped the switch over and it killed the engine but powered the flame thrower coil. With the engine still turning, it would pump unburned fuel into the exhuast which would be lit off by the spark plug in the tail pipe. There was a little control box for the flame thrower, I guess so it would spark more than once. I never saw it work but that is how it was supposed to go.

Go to hotrodsofnorco.com
You can get a full kit for about $140.
I have seen this kit on a 56 chevy with a 350 and it shot out 5 foot flames. Just make sure that your tail pipes stick out of you car enough and remember that you can not run any emissions equiptment at all.

my car shoots flames when it hits the rev limiter on the fogger - unburnt fuel getting lit up on the way out. I have it on video somewhere.

I am thinking about getting an air shifter or shiftnoid because it hits 8000 instantly if it loses traction with the nitous on.

here ya go

edit: this kit is pricey but it tells a bit more of what's going on.

I made my own flamethrower setup here.
It doesn't interupt the engines ignition or fuel systems(s),& theres no 'pumping the throttle'.As you can see,it got a little crazy with the wind blowing that night, but no damage was done.It looks bitchen at night idling thru a parking lot or down a busy street!
