I have been visiting this site for the last several months and a post was submitted that I just wanted to follow up on. It was a subject about the definition of COPO. It was stated I believe, that a COPO was an item delivered on a car that was not offered on the option list but could be added by the dealer if they new it was available through Chevrolet.
Is that a true? I have not been able to find a definite answer to this with all my web searching.
I have a vested interest in this because, I have a friend that keeps on mentioning to me that the car I own is a COPO and I seriously do not
know for a fact that it is.
I would like any help on this matter if anyone so chooses to jump in.
Thanks,

JWA

Welcome to TC Alan. This forum is mainly for introductions. A post like this should be placed in the COPO forum alittle farther down the main forum page. Here is a direct link:

BTW While I believe you definition is probably close COPO usually refers to the 427 Chevelles and Camaros built in 1969.
Another spot to clarify this would be at www.yenko.net as a lot of smart folks who know the COPO cars hang out there. Other COPOs exist:

Hi Alan,
Welcome to the TC Welcome Forum. COPO, Central Office Production Order, was for special items that did not normally come on the model. You may well have one. I hope you are lucky enough to have a build sheet.

Check out the "COPO and Dealer Forum". That will be very helpful..... Actually, I see that you have already been there. Good luck.

Welcome to TC.

Hello and welcome Alan. What is it about your car that your friend thinks it is a COPO?

Tim,
The reason is I believe, you had to know the L78 was an option by asking for it specifically because it was not listed on the order form at the dealership. They had to fill in a special area or some other paper work to complete the order. I suspect, just like the COPO Chevelles, Camaros, etc. in 1969. The L78 was not listed on the form until 1969. Hence, the low production numbers on the L78 option in 1968.
Thanks.

The L78 in 1968 was an RPO (regular production option) therefore it could not be a COPO. Although it might not have been a highly publicized option, Chevy still sold 4,751 cars with the L78 option.

That is considerably more than the 2,144 sold in 1970. In 1970 it was still an RPO and not a COPO.

In 1967 only 612 L78 cars were built. That was an extremely low number but it was still an RPO.

Tim,
Thanks for the information. Where do you get your production numbers? It has been stated to me before, thorough the many years of owner ship that the production numbers were considerably lower than the 4,517 number you presented. More in the 1500+/- range.
Everyone has been a great help and I thank-you all!

Chevelle and El Camino ID Model Codes by the National Chevelle Owners Association. The president Mark Meekins had access to chevy, GM and Tonawanda information. He also had Fran Preve's expertise at his side.
