take a 125 shot of nitrous and last? My son is thinking about buying it for his truck. I've heard they are stronger than cast, not quite as good as forged, but don't like nitrous? TIA

Thats kinda iffy. Its a gray region. How often is he gonna hit em? Id use forged myself for the little extra money just to be safe. Im assuming its a 350 and pistons are dirt cheap anyways.

everyone ive talked to about running Nitrous has said the hypers are fine till about 150-200. depends on how much you hit the button. Ive had one racer said he reguarly used 450 on them but im not so sure about that.

The engine has been together for a year and a half,,,he's running mid 13's in his truck,,,he wants to go faster, there is another truck at the track with a 454 that runs slightly quicker than him,,,he wants an equalizer. I thought a 100-125 shot might be safe???

Robert,
IMO,I would think it will all depend on how tight the ring gaps are and, to a lesser extent, who manufactured the pistons.
Some are made with the top ring pretty close to the top of the piston.

Power is just cylinder pressure. You can't just say a 125 shot is ok. Is the engine making 200 HP or 600 HP without nitrous? I'd guess without much info he is making 375 HP, so adding 125 would be 500 HP with a lot of torque down low.

I make 340 RWHP and sprayed up to a 140 shot last year with KB's and cast rings. Made 450 HP at the wheels and torque was not measureable with the converter (showed 600 at the wheels). After a fair amount of nitrous on a short block with 500++ runs, #4 has a bad leakdown and I had to stop spraying, although it runs fine ont eh motor still. I had my rings gapped at .028 per KB, would have did them a little more even if I knew I was going to spray it.

All nitrous kits are not created equal as far as distribution. ALl it takes is one lean hole. I run a port NOSzle system with stainless steel flowed jets, take out timing, and ran straight race gas with the 140 jets which helps with parts that nobody said would last at all.

I'd say he need to be very careful, don't spray below 3000-4000 RPM ever, take timing out, and run good gas. And look at ALL plugs, not just one or two. I have 7 great ones, and #4 showed signs of distress.

I also tune with a wideband oxygen sensor and have a pretty rich tuneup. Fuel pressure is critical with nitrous as compared to a carb which doesn't care much. Pressure=flow rate with nitrous.

run it fat if you try it. hyperuetectics need around 10 thousandths more ring gap than normal if you are going to spray it. i'm guessing you weren't planning on using nos so you probably didn't gap them for it, right? i would be very cautious, they tend to lift the top ring land when using nos without the wider ring gap.

No...I/we werent planning on running nitrous when the engine was built. Thanks guys

I have an Edelbrock kit that helped me win the Street Rod Championship last year. The instructions indicate that a 125hp hit is the max with cast iron pistons. You should be fine with hyperuthetics. I have been running Speed Pro Hypers and they are holding up just fine. I run 100hp hit max. Be sure that your fuel supply is up to par. I run a mechanical Holley pump that puts out 140 gph and regulate it at 7psi. Fuel volume is the key. A friend of mine hits his hypers with 200hp hits......no damage yet.

Good luck!
Daniel

Daniel they can take it if the rings are gapped for it, but it's definately a much higher risk if the gaps are tight, more so than on cast pistons, IMO.
