: Street 327cu - Mild Build - Comp or Voodoo Cam, please advise

My dad is looking for a new cam for his 327cu in his 1967 Camaro covertible. The car is a 4spd car and he wants a nice cam that will give him good power in the RPM range he most operates the car. The car does not get abused so it will not be spun past 4000rpm.

The motor is a standard bore 327cu, the heads are "461's" with no porting, but have been tanked and redone. The intake will most likely be a Performer EPS with a 1" 4hole phenolic carb spacer (or a Performer RPM and perhaps short phenolic spacer depending on hood clearance) an a 600cfm Holley 4160 carb. It will also have full length headers with mufflers.

The car is a street only car, he wants it to have good power and a good sound. My mother also has to be able to drive this thing and we don't want anything super agressive, just a nice street cam which builds power where this car is going to operate most of the time, less than 4000rpm. The car has 3.08 gears, but new gears may be on the horizon, not sure yet.

So, what would you recommend? Whats the story on the Comp Cams ... how about the Voodoo's are they worth the extra money? If so what makes them worth it?

Thanks everyone

Y0ou would like the Lunati 60100, the VooDoo 250. It is 250/256 at the seat, 207/213 at .050, .437/.454 valve lift, and 112 LSA. It is ground 4° advanced, so you can put it in dot-to-dot, if you want. It works with all-stock parts, like springs, etc. We ran the VooDoo 256 in a 355, 9.2:1 CR, with Vortec heads and valve springs. Peak power was about 4800, but it turned freely up to 6200.
The VooDoo 250 should have about 17" to 18" of vacuum in a 327, and should pull from idle.
If you want the next step milder, use the Lunati 301A1LUN. It is 199/207 at .050, .401/.432 valve lift, and also 112 LSA. It works great in 305s and 327s, even more vacuum, and good power to 5000. I have had YEARS of running with the Lunati 301A1LUN, it has a long history of long life on the street....

Harold, how would the Lunati VooDoo 60101 or 60102 compare with Comp's 12-206-2 or the 12-210-2

My dad is currently leaning towards the 12-210-2 how would this compare with the VooDoos?

BTW - This motor is basically all stock and the compression is around 10.5:1, just as it was when new.

Thanks for all of you help, we are fairly newbies at camshaft selection

Bryan,

We dynoed the VooDoos against their corresponding Xtreme Energy counterparts. In EVERY case, the VooDoo cams made more torque and more horsepower, across the board. We did not try them against the older High Energy cams, but I believe they would easily handle those.
This past week I just dynoed a VooDoo hydraulic roller against its' Xtreme Energy counterpart. We were 1° smaller at .050 on the intake, 1° bigger on exhaust. Valve lifts were .003" int/.005" exh, higher.
At 2500 we had 32 ftlbs more torque, from 3200 to 4200 we were 9 ftlbs up, from 5000 to 5600 we were over 12 BHP up, and only 3" more vacuum at idle. I predict we will sell an awful lot of these cams.....
This was in our Vortec-headed 9.2:1 355.....

I think the Comp grinds 72 Elcamino is asking about are your old 260HE and 268HE designs.

The High Energy cams are all single-pattern cams, the VooDoos are all dual-pattern. This picks up the top-end a notch.
The VooDoo 256 is 213/219 at .050, .454/.468 valve lift, 112 LSA.
The VooDoo 262 is 219/227 at .050, .468/.489 valve lift, still 112 LSA.
We cut them off at 6200. but they all went there...

What will the idle sound like on the 262 and 268 VooDoo cams?
What was the old UD cam that sounded like a drum solo? Are you grinding one that idles like that in the VooDoo line?

Jeff,

That was my 276/284F10, the Lunati 402A3.
When we finally get the VooDoo solids released, THEY WILL SOUND BETTER!
