: Fair Warning
Dean May 28th, 08, 4:34 PM Folks, it seems that interjecting silly-no help posts into serious threads is becoming contagious so this is fair warning.
People ask a simple serious question or post any serious thread for that matter and have to put up with silly stuff messing up their thread.
Since I have nothing better to do than set here all day and half the night, I think I'm going to start deleting every one of the silly-off topic posts.
Andy69 May 28th, 08, 4:36 PM hold for sarcasm.

Andy69 May 28th, 08, 4:39 PM Dean just posted an open invitation for meaningless posts
ROFL!

how about, delete'n the post that say only
"use the search"
as those are pointless.
I use the search,(maybe i'm doing it wrong/newish to computers)
but I get a 19 pages of matches..
and most have nothing to do with ,the search..
that might be why, people ask the question..
but get the reply.."use the search"

Cool a chance to post.... I agree 100%! When someone asks a question they want some kind of an answer; most of the time it's a new person to this site so saying use the search function is pointless.

ANY post by Brad or Andy!!!:D:D There, no singling any one person out; there are two of them.:D:D:D:D
Nolowrider May 28th, 08, 5:32 PM Folks, it is my fault that the "serious" post got shut down. I APOLOGIZE TO EVERYONE, especially to 8sec71.
That is all I am going to say because I don't want this one to get closed.
Andy69 May 28th, 08, 5:35 PM I think Dean needs another hobby.
How's that car coming along Dean?
Andy69 May 28th, 08, 5:36 PM now that's a legitimate car question so watch that itchy finger :p
Andy69 May 28th, 08, 5:37 PM sorry, for some reason the "Edit post" button doesn't show up in Firefox
Shevelle May 28th, 08, 5:37 PM I think Deans kiddin'. Nothing here but All silly-no help posts and they're all still here! :D
But, If he does do away with meaningless, no-help posts my post count is going to grow backwards...I'll be back at 2. http://www.cantweight.net/files/Smiles/walkaway.gif
Andy69 May 28th, 08, 5:39 PM are you kidding? almighty Dean himself would be back to a mere 10,000 posts

Cecil May 28th, 08, 6:07 PM So for every post deleted, is that going to generate another thread complaining about it?

So far, yes.
Pretty sure Dean is referring to more of the technical type stuff here and in the real tech forums where folks are trying to get help for their issue and folks like Andy and Brad come along and start their song and dance with each other and it pushes the topic off track(just an example they are not the only ones). All he is asking is for some consideration of the thread starter so their answer doesn't have found by sifting through a bunch of noise. This gotten the notice of the mods (might have even been some complaints logged) so Dean was giving you folks a bit of a heads up there might be some purging to help keep things on track. There is the ban button too, but I think Dean is too nice of a guy to utilize that function.
As for the search deal. There is a sticky in the welcome forum that might be helpful and getting more relevant results for what you are trying to ask (also linked in my signature). One thing I wish worked a little better would be that search results could be posted in a thread as a group instead of having to post each as a separate link. I think part of the time you see folks say do a search they have done it and don't want to take the time to try and post what they found for results as it is cumbersome.
Andy69 May 28th, 08, 6:13 PM I'll bet an equal number of people find the good natured banter entertaining.
I've heard more positive comments than negative.
Not when they are trying to get an answer. Also folks around here get flamed pretty quickly if they do publicly complain about treatment of their thread, so most won't do it publicly for that reason.
Andy69 May 28th, 08, 6:19 PM I always try to post a decent answer before starting in with the ribbing, as do most of the other you are talking about. I would say in most cases there is an answer within the first few posts. I am not sure I've ever seen a post that goes on and on with a bunch of nothing before ever giving a good answer.

If Big Block Dave was still around, you'd take away his reason for existing!!
From what I have seen, I'll say you aren't trying very hard to give an answer to a thread. I'd give you an example but to dig through your fluff responses to thread outside of CE I don't think I could find one where you gave an answer. The search engine only allows me to collect the last 300 posts. Let me see if I can come up with one.....
Edit: I found a few as you say out of the first 300 in tech but I had to sort through a bunch to find those Andy.
Just so you know Andy this wasn't all about you.
Mr69 May 28th, 08, 6:33 PM You're 100% spot on Dean. I have been wanting to say something about this a long time ago. It's very annoying. I fully understand where Dean is coming from and Andy and Brad are the worst offenders. They feed each other.

1BLACKHARLEY May 28th, 08, 6:41 PM i think i understand, i was recently involved in a thread where somebody was asking for help, and it turned into page after page of people's moral, and political beliefs. poor guy asking for advice never knew what hit him, and when some of us tried to steer it back to subject, it just went haywire. i've on ocassion high jacked a thread, i'll try harder in the future, not to do this....

Amen... Nothing less helpful than those responses. We ask questions because we can't find answers elsewhere.
Derek69SS May 28th, 08, 7:01 PM Amen... Nothing less helpful than those responses. We ask questions because we can't find answers elsewhere. In many cases, the question has been answered a thousand times... if you can't find it, chances are you're not looking hard enough.
Bowtie-72 May 28th, 08, 7:07 PM Maybe the mod could just quote the original question and add "let's keep this on track" without having to stir up more problems?
And we shouldn't single out Andy or Brad, there's plenty of us who chime in.
Ricks70ss May 28th, 08, 7:13 PM Your right Derek!! But some of us don't know where to look for the answers were looking for. I'm still learning about this site. Not all of us that get on here are as good at this as others. Some take more time then others. But its gets to be a chore if someone hijacks your post. Then others take off with that. And you still don't find out the info. I've been there once or twice. But I am getting better at it. Derek. I know you've been asked 1000 times about suspensions. But not all of us are working on the samething as everyone else at that time. so then we post it. You have been great on helping guys out on that. But some others just make a stupied comment and nothing else is said. were all not as fast on working on ours cars as others. Wish we could be. But it takes time. Just my opinion. Thanks for your time. Not just Derek. Alot of you have been helpful to most of us. And I thank you for that. Sorry about the rant. Rick
Finally May 28th, 08, 7:16 PM I do add 'off topic' replies to technical questions but I pretty much limit that to posts from people who know me and I know them. I also tell people to use the search, usually after giving a basic answer. I don't feel I should have to do the search for them and I don't feel I should have to retype a long detailed answer when I know a search will provide all the info they need. That said I only tell them to do a search when I know for sure a detailed answer has been provided before by someone with a lot of knowledge in that area and a quick reply may not be sufficient.
So how about dem WINGS!

Not to come across like a jerk Hank, but nobody's asking you to repeat your long and detailed answer. If you've answered it for one person, you don't have to answer it again and again.
PaPa Johns 77 May 28th, 08, 7:30 PM This thread while insightful is slowly evolving into a situation none here want to to see! Maybe Mods it is time to end it. The point has been made.:)

Ryan, I wasn't referring to an answer I provided. I meant an excellant response from another team member. One I know exists and I don't want to try to repeat. Especially when I know I couldn't do as good a job. That's what I meant. I think if it was easier to add stickys that would help a lot. Or possibly a sub-forum for common questions like the difference in engine frame mounts or how do I upgrade to an internally regulated alternator. Those 2 questions seem to come up on a weekly basis and there are some very good, detailed replies.
Dean May 28th, 08, 7:59 PM OK, I'm not talking about fun threads that start out as being silly on the first post.
I'm talking about busting into someone else's serious thread and posting off topic-no help posts just to been seen and many times hijacking the OP's post with the help of other people following suite.
That stuff gets old pretty quick and people get sick of seeing it over and over.
As far as telling people to use the search feature, personally, I have mixed feelings because if everyone did a search rather than ask, there would be no questions and therefore no informative answers and some people are here to share what they know and love doing it.
Y'all will start seeing what I'm talking about, probably soon.
SixActual May 28th, 08, 8:04 PM In many cases, the question has been answered a thousand times... if you can't find it, chances are you're not looking hard enough.
I found by posting a question on a thread that's several months old after conducting a Search, I have none to meager responses than if I began a new thread about it. Now, I'm talking about a different question on a thread about the same topic.
Respecfully,
John R.

quikss May 28th, 08, 8:20 PM The typical "use the search feature" answer is only so good as well. As near as I can tell, we have a good number of new people joining this site every day, perhaps a few of them have a more detailed or diffrent way to answer the same question that has been answered a thousand times before. Go in the performance section, at least once a week the question of a good 454 combo comes up, yet a new or diffrent combo gets posted all the time.
So many new people, I figure at least a few of them have some pretty darn good knowledge, (I'm not one of them).

yes I'm guilty of being a wise ass at times ...... but I do try to answer most questions ... before Razzing several people who I consider friends ...... if its getting out of hand .
I'll behave.... but I always thought it was one of the things that kept the site fun & light hearted .....
69396ss May 28th, 08, 9:06 PM Does anybody really care if the Silliness is in bench Racing or "What it's Worth" anyway?
Isn't that where the majority is?
These are subjective opinion based catagories anyway with minimal serious discussion to begin with....
Right?
I don't know, a One or two answer "yes or no" strictly utilitarian "team Chevelle" dosen't sound too good to me either.
Remember our Roots, a bunch of gear heads hanging out and BS'ing...... What was it in 1995? Hot Cars and Cold beer?
I agree a happy medium should exist, to include some good hearted "BS"
Bryan59EC May 28th, 08, 9:30 PM Gotta admit,
Some of the title questions just SCREAM for a silly answer.
I was thinking the other day, of starting a thread.
How many of you see a title that is just asking for a smartazz reply??
At the same time----i see no harm in repeating an answer to a common question.
A gent at another board replied with extreme patience to any electrical question, no matter how simple or complicated----from his hospital bed more than once----and right up to 5 days before his passing last Sept. (15 yr battle w/cancer)
gspan1830 May 28th, 08, 9:33 PM How will we know who's post have been cut?? Will it be the screen name but with no reply??
69396ss May 28th, 08, 9:37 PM It appears it will simply be removed without trace.
gspan1830 May 28th, 08, 9:41 PM Won't that cause multiple post by the same person??
69396ss May 28th, 08, 9:50 PM In most cases, an entirely seperate conversation will likely be removed and may lend to smoother editing/censorship.
A difficult task to remain subjective and consistant I would assume.
AXEMAN39 May 28th, 08, 9:50 PM I'll bet an equal number of people find the good natured banter entertaining.

Dean May 28th, 08, 10:02 PM I think some still don't understand what I'm talking about.
It's not about general fun threads, heck WE ALL need to have a little fun when we can.
It's about breaking in on someone's serious thread and posting something unrelated causing the thread's subject to be changed.
I dunno, in my opinion it's being rude to the OP to interject silly stuff into their serious thread.
I posted this thread in hopes that it would stop.
Xplantdad May 28th, 08, 10:07 PM I can imagine that moderating is not a lot of fun...but people can certainly be taken out of context...and opinions can be based on subjective feelings alone. And the mods certainly aren't perfect...but they do a job not a whole lot of people would care to do...
Things can go downhill here FAST...with an innocently asked question. I know, I've experienced it here first hand. The assinine remarks went on in other posts after I chose to delete my question and the subsequent replies (only two were on point-the rest were idiotic)...but I am capable of ignoring the comments;)
I've also had the chance to meet one of the mods here who had his opinion about what "I am all about" (related to the point made above)and to his credit (when we met up and I let him know who I was) was cool enough to say he made a mistake in judging me. I told him it wasn't a mistake...it was just his opinion and that everybody has one...and it didn't bother me at all. There are WAY more important things in life to worry about. In fact, I still owe him something to drink:beers:
As far as the people who ask for opinions and get the standard reply of "Why don't you use the search function...this question has been posted a thousand times?", my feeling on this is if you are "going to waste bandwidth" stating the obvious, then don't bother:noway:.
Not everyone out there is a computer whiz or is intimately familiar with how internet forums work. Everyone has to start somewhere:yes:
Finally, I've had the pleasure of meeting up with quite a few members on this board and others. Those who know or have met me know the type of person that I am. I also enjoy the ribbing that goes on here...it makes for some good laughs after I get off of work. :D
My more than .02

Plus, sometimes a situation is just slightly different enough that you can't find the exact answer to your question.
This message has been deleted by Dean. Reason: this is how you will see it which will make everyone curious naturally. What about the ones that just disappear?
Chris R May 28th, 08, 11:19 PM I know things get off track on many posts, this sort of thing happens on every forum. Personally, I feel it sort of helps make the new posters feel more comfortable sometimes with some humor added into serious posts. Its the derailed or standoffish nature that sometimes makes a new member feel unwelcome here.

Dean May 29th, 08, 1:52 AM Sorry Al, I just wanted to make one last post :o
To the folks they stayed on topic here, thanks for your input.
I get the feeling that some think I’m going to be deleting a whole bunch of stuff and at least one person thinks I am the only person out of thousands that get tired of seeing it happen.
Jeff is correct; I am referring to more of the technical type stuff being hijacked plus being rude to new people by interjecting off topic posts into their serious threads.
Some people don’t say anything; they just don’t ever come back.
Again, I’m not talking about trying to stop the fun we have here, Lord knows we all need to get away from the serious and the troubled world stuff when we can.
As for the search subject, lets not reply “HEY USE THE SEARCH BUD” but instead tell them HOW to search and find the answer. New people need our help until they get familiar with our site and I just feel that “use the search” is a no help reply to many.
So for every post deleted, is that going to generate another thread complaining about it?
Tim.
I was thinking about that while I was out in the shop and you’re right Tim
How will we know who's post have been cut?? Will it be the screen name but with no reply??
It appears it will simply be removed without trace.
Yes and I’ll notify the poster via PM.
Won't that cause multiple post by the same person??
See above.
Dean, without calling anyone out, can you please give examples of what you don't want to see?
