: New Bests - Again!!!
kjett Nov 6th, 04, 7:22 PM Went over to South Carolina to participate in a club meeting today (SVT Cobra Club). Jackson, SC. is the hardest hooking track any where around here. Set new bests in all categories.
Best run of the day:
60' - 1.46
330' - 4.29
1/8th - 6.68
MPH - 102.52
1/4 - 10.53
MPH - 126
Best 60' of the day:
1.45
I made a total of 9 passes today. 60' times were:
1.49, 1.50, 1.52, 1.52, 1.45, 1.46, 1.48, 1.48, 1.50. The first run with a 1.49 60' was with the same shock settings I ran at Reynolds the day before. Only difference being I lowered the front end 2.5" by cutting almost 1.5 coils out of each spring. I was playing with shock settings on the 2/3/4 runs. I settled in with the shock settings and it ran pretty consistent from there on. I had a little tire spin on the last run as the teeth were starting to go out of the track due to all the street tire cars.
As some of you may know I decided to pull the coil over suspension off of the front of my car. I retained the Global West upper control arms and went back with the stock lower control arms. I bought a set of MOOG 6 cylinder springs and cut 1.5 coils out of them. For shocks I'm using a pair of Koni SPA1 drag shocks I already had set on full stiff. The car is back to hooking again and better than before. For those of you questioning the swap from an Edelbrock RPM to the Dart oval/rect single plane....My best pass previously is in my signature and was made at nearly -1,000' DA with a pretty stout tail wind. Today's best pass was made in +1,700' air with a slight headwind! This thing would run bottom 40's in -1,000' air. Nuff said! I'm keeping the single plane graemlins/thumbsup.gif
P.S. Met a fellow TC'er up from South, GA today. Mike (a.k.a. MCAF). He had a 71' Elcamino with a pretty mild SBC running 11.80's on motor. Nice ride!
427L88 Nov 6th, 04, 7:26 PM Sir, let me be the first! graemlins/thumbsup.gif CONGRATS! graemlins/beers.gif
70_FathomBlueMalibu Nov 6th, 04, 7:32 PM Sumbitch Ken! This is like a weekly occurrence with you.
What else can you do to wring a few more ticks out of it?
kjett Nov 6th, 04, 7:48 PM Thanks, Gene.
Justin, I think I'm done tweaking on this combo. As I stated in my other post the engine is due to be freshened up, so I'll be pulling it out in the next few weeks.
Plans for the new mill include:
- milling the heads to go from 119cc to 113cc (may have to fly cut the pistons to get clearance)
- Already ordered a new bump stick
- New Crower sportsman rods
- New rings, bearings, etc...
- Engine dyno tuning
Hopefully this thing will really be toting the mail next year ;)
JOHN WILSON Nov 6th, 04, 10:27 PM Congrats.....Again! graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Nice to see that new best on your 60' also. Wish I could get a handle on mine. Do you have any video of your runs and if so can you tell what the difference in wheelspin looks like between a 1.50 and 1.45 60'? Is a 1.45 a dead hook vs a 1.50 with the tires spinning a couple feet out? What does the difference feel like from the drivers seat?
Good choice on the new rods.
70_FathomBlueMalibu Nov 6th, 04, 10:28 PM Sooooooooo....are we talkin' 9's or what?
I'd be curious as to the specs on the cam. BTW, how much does Cam Motion want for a grind? Do they have a website? I hear good things about them.
Wolfplace Nov 6th, 04, 11:02 PM Are we havin fun yet??
Very nice Ken graemlins/beers.gif
SS_Sean Nov 6th, 04, 11:11 PM Ken, what's your opinion of the HRpartsS rear sway bar setup now that you've had a chance to run it a few times? How's it helping out (or not) with consistancy?
Yes that track hooks so well that I broke an axle the first time I sprayed that day. It was a fun ride for the first 60'.
I bested my 1/8 mile times from savannah's track so that was a improvement. I was looking foward to better times on the bottle
I was a good to actual Meet you and Gordon on person. It was a good tome for all
Mike
great job ken, do you ever miss the 4 speed ? just curious.

Good choice on the new rods. Thanks, John. We didn't bring the cam corder yesterday. Honestly from the seat it's hard to tell the difference between a 1.45 (which by the way was a 1.459) and a 1.50. I think my car is dead hooking at 1.46, and as you said maybe turning the tires 1-2 revolutions at 1.50. The only thing I can notice from the drivers seat is that the front drops faster at 1.50.

I'm hoping to pick up .1-.2 from the planned changes. In sea level air it should run low 10.3 assuming it can get a bite. I'll share the cam specs after I see how it works ;) I paid $290 + shipping for my new cam ground on a billet core.

It's really hard to say because I've made so many chassis changes trying the get the car to work again. I think it's a good compromise for people not wanting to weld in a real ARB or for those like me that run tail pipes. Because of the bend in the bar and the flex in the mounting location (rear cross member) I don't think it can react as quickly or work as consistently as a solid ARB.

Mike :D We had that discussion before they started racing. In fact, on one of my runs my car went into tire shake so bad that I thought I had broken the trans or rear. That track hooks like crazy. Glad you got some good runs in, but real sorry your axle broke. Good meeting you and your friend. Maybe we can do it again in the spring.

great job ken, do you ever miss the 4 speed ? just curious. Hi Ray. The short answer is no. For racing a heavy car the automatic is much easier on parts and more consistent. Having said that, I don't street drive me car nearly as much with the auto. The car was much more streetable with a stick vs. the 5k stall. Right now I prefer drag racing so the auto will stay. When I put the car back on the street it will be a stick, and quite like a 6 speed smile.gif
mr 4 speed Nov 7th, 04, 8:22 AM Ken,nice job graemlins/thumbsup.gif

10secBu Nov 7th, 04, 10:41 AM Congrats Ken graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Always nice to end the season on a positive note (assuming your season is about over?). I just can't say the same for myself, but that's a story for another post graemlins/clonk.gif .
Glad to hear a different track showed positive results on the traction issue. Just goes to show that there is a great difference from one track to another as far as starting line prep/hook and if one doesn't go to different tracks, they may struggle and never know that their traction issues may have been the track all along and not their cars setup or tuning.
Keep us posted on future updates to the car.
kjett Nov 7th, 04, 7:09 PM Thanks everyone. It was a great way to end the season. Boy, it's going to be a long winter graemlins/sad.gif
marooned Nov 7th, 04, 7:37 PM
Nice
gearheads78 Nov 7th, 04, 11:53 PM Congrats Ken,
You got that thing flying for such a heavy car on straight motor.
Georgia69 Nov 8th, 04, 9:15 AM Wow...sorry I missed that! Are you carrying the front tires on those 1.4X 60' runs? Any video? smile.gif

Nothing spectacular. Just hooking hard and going. Lauren forgot to bring the cam corder yesterday :( This is the only souvenir that I have from Saturday:

Well, that and a trophy for having the quickest car there ;)
Georgia69 Nov 8th, 04, 1:52 PM I'd frame that and hang it over the fireplace smile.gif
(Chant...) VI-DE-O, VI-DE-O, VI-DE-O :D
Dan Orgill Nov 8th, 04, 3:31 PM Ken, I love the way your car looks and is set up. It appears only mildly modified, but your track times tell a much different story ;) .
Way to go!! graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Way to go!! graemlins/thumbsup.gif Thanks, Rat. You're prolly looking at the picture on my home page. The car no longer has the stock steel hood. I installed a glass hood with a 2" cowl in order to get enough clearance for the Dart intake and .5" spacer. Other than the hood, wheels and the roll bar it's all steel, full interior just like the General intended smile.gif
Holy crap, how did I miss this post?
Ken, nice going! graemlins/thumbsup.gif
At this rate, you will be in the 9's in a year and a half. ;)
canfield should use your car for a advertisement!
