: 68 Chevelle 307 engine works need ideas!! Help
68-307Chevelle May 25th, 08, 10:44 PM Any ideas you may have are welcome, I am starting with body work..please help with engine and trans..Currently its got the original 307 engine works fine little trouble but easy fix, I want more power. I am not familiar with this engine and don't know how far I can take it COST IS A FACTOR in this rebuild. so the idea is more power with 307 vs new engine, cost effective?:hurray: Thanks for helping.
jpete May 25th, 08, 11:05 PM If you can find a set of HO 305 heads, you could bump the compression for fairly cheap. I think I saw a set for around $200 recently.
That, a small cam and a small 4 barrel will be "good enough" for now.

68-307Chevelle May 27th, 08, 10:45 AM thanks, this is great.... saved me a LOT of time
Jimmy P May 27th, 08, 11:14 AM If your only 'want' is more power, I wouldn't waste time with a 307. Stick it in a corner and just buy or build a 383 for about the same price.
With gas prices the way they are, they 307 isn't a bad idea and you could tighten it up without spending a lot.
What transmission and rear gear do you have? You can make substantial gains in using the power you have with a 200R4 swap and a gear change. I think it's better money spent in the drive train than power-adding parts for a 307.
socalGTOpilot May 27th, 08, 4:59 PM I'm in the same spot as the OP, my 69 sedan is a 307/pg car. My "plan" is:
305 heads
intake man. and carb.
cam (thinking something like this: http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=SUM%2D1104&autoview=sku)
headers/full exhaust
eventually 700R4 or at least TH350 trans
I'm going to look for used or otherwise cheap parts, run it till it blows and swap a FI gen 4 LS motor
TMessick May 31st, 08, 6:49 AM I'm still running the 'ol 307 in my camaro for now. Long-term plans are to drop in a 383, but I wanted to spend some $ getting the driveline up to the task before I drop in the 383, so I freshened up the little 307 to "get me by" for now.
My combo:
-- Cheapo re-ring & new bearings
-- Summit "performer" cam kit (http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=SUM%2DK1102&autoview=sku) (204/214, 0.420"/0.442")
-- 305 HO heads (416 castings) with cheapo Z28 springs and a garage bowl blend job
-- Edelbrock Perf. RPM intake (too big for the 307 really, but it'll bolt to the 383 fine)
-- Edelbrock Perf 600 carb
-- Thorley tri-y headers w/ 2.5" exhaust
-- MSD R2R dizzy
Intake and carb were done a while ago when my old 2bbl started flaking out and I got sick of rebuilding it. I knew I'd eventually get rid of the 307, so I went with the perf RPM figuring it'd be a better choice for the 350/383. Similarly, the headers and dizzy will move over to the "new" engine when I get around to it. Overall, the car is a lot more fun with these changes. It's still no rocket ship, but it's quite entertaining to drive for now.
If you want to just pep up the car "on the cheap" , I'd do a cheapo summit cam kit (1102 or 1103), 305 HO heads (416 or 601 castings), maybe a used Qjet intake/carb (just stay with a dual-plane manifold). Add some headers and a decent exhaust and it'll be fun.
Another thing that you REALLY should consider is dumping the Pglide for a TH350 (or a 4spd auto or manual) The 307 is never going to be a torque monster and the gearing/spacing on the Pglide does not play well with low-torque motors.

68-307Chevelle Jun 4th, 08, 2:29 AM I have somewhat of a problem, can anyone tell me where to find the engine codes for a 68 4 door as everything I've read states to check by the passenger side or by the alternator "on the passenger side" but the engine has the alternator on the driver side the only marking I found was on the intake 340234R or may even be an A instead of R. Please help!!! Also found B144 may be 13144 unsure - very dark and dirty engine, as well as GM22
