Installed the Custom Autosound kickpanels ton my '70 A/C car today. I had ordered the new Infinity Kappa 62.9is (1-15/16" shallow mount) but they sent the regular version 62.9i 2-5/16" depth. Now (after they got my money) they tell me the shallows won't be available until late June
So I tested the "i" model and there is no way that fits. Off by better than 1/2" on the driver's side. The "is" only gains 3/8". So now I'm wondering what to do here. The 1-15/16 seems to be the most shallow premium speaker available, atleast from what I've seen. Not interested in the CAS 1-5/8 Pioneer versions.
I've read these and other threads on these kickpanels: http://www.chevelles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=196334&highlight=infinity+speaker and http://www.chevelles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=79531&highlight=shallow+speaker and see some people getting the Infinitys to fit... but I believe they are cutting those door hinge reinforcements for clearance. I don't want to do that. Add to this the tall speaker grille height and I just don't know.
Here is Infinity's specs (see page 8) http://manuals.harman.com/INF/CAR/Owner%27s%20Manual/Kappa.9MEOMPrintFriendlyRev14Mar2008.pdf
Proposed fix: 62.9is, spacer ring to solve depth issue, alternative shallow grille. Back in the early 90s, I had some 6.5" Alpines with 1/2-inch high no-frills grilles. Are there aftermarket solutions like this today?
'Would appreciate some help figuring this out.
