: what is it with people?
Andy69 May 24th, 08, 10:48 PM We were very fortunate to have a lot of stuff given to us when we had Amelia three years ago. We're talking clothes, toys, climbers, etc, some really expensive stuff. A lot was too big for her, but we kept it, knowing (of course) that she would eventually use it. Well, after Amelia outgrew the stuff, we'd offer it to friends and family who had new babies, thinking it would be appreciated. More often then not, they said they didn't want it! For instance, we offered the Little Tykes climbers and slides to several people, who refused, saying their kid wasn't old enough to use them. And this stuff isn't junk, mind you. We got most of it used but in excellent condition, and it remained so. Now that their kids are old enough, they are calling us and asking if we still have them! Heck no! We sold them on Craig's List a year ago because you didn't want them!!! Now they are upset because they have to pay full price. Oh well! Same thing with my wife's maternity clothes, and our baby clothes. We ended up giving one big batch to one of my wife's friend's manicurist because no one else wanted it. Hundreds and hundreds of $$$$ worth if you paid full new price!. Don't people think ahead??? What the heck!!

OrrieG May 24th, 08, 11:00 PM So because they deceided that the kids were not old enough you were supposed to store it until they were? Going thorugh a similar drill with my daughters soon to be ex-husband. They are selling the house and there is all this stuff he wants to keep, but does not want to rent a storage unit or place big enough for it. He commented that maybe we could keep it because we "have the room". We have the room because we got all of our kids stuff out of the garage and storeroom, none of it is coming back. It's also amazing how many of my tools have showed up now that they have to completely empty the house and garage, two big boxes worth so far....

I don't understand that. We took EVERYTHING, even boy clothes. It saved us probably several thousand dollars over the last 3 years.
PaPa Johns 77 May 24th, 08, 11:03 PM It seems that a lot of people think used is not good enough. My oldest sons ex girlfriend had a baby and my wifes niece had all kinds of clothes and things. She had recieved so much that some was only wore once or twice before her baby out grew it. Well she gave it all to the sons' ex girlfriend and they took it all to St Vincent Depaul and gave it away. Why? Because it was "old used crap" as she termed it! It all had came from Pennys, Sears, Khols and etc.

Well, it's people like that who ensure a steady stream of quality stuff to the thrift shops, and from there into our closets. You have no idea how much we save by shopping at Salvation Army and Goodwill. My annual clothing bill is probably less than $50. And I don't buy crap - Gap, Doc Marten (just bought a pair of Docs for $2 last fall - best pair of shoes I have ever had, and would have cost me $150+ in the store), Dockers, etc, you name it. And more often than not, the clothes I buy still have the tags on them.
The money saved goes into, in order:
1) Kid's education fund
2) retirement fund
3) Chevelle fund :)
Jim Mac May 24th, 08, 11:34 PM Cool thing about my work, our uniform pants are Jeans. so I havent bought a pair of jeans in over 5 years or more. I work with a guy who has a 1 year old. his gf spends them broke buying all sorts of NEW stuff. Nike shoes, name brand clothes. FOR A ONE YEAR OLD!!!!, the kid outgrows everything so fast, the stuff doesnt get worn out. jim
LKSV8 May 25th, 08, 2:38 AM Its the same the world over,my partner LIZ (a fantastic woman) has more shoes than Imelda Marcos and very rarely parts with them, i ask "why all the shoes, you can only wear one at a time" her reply is "why do you need 150 1/ 18 scale cars". no answer to that one. sorry i went of track there. heres the catch ,every week without fail we get a plastic sack into our door looking for good second hand clothes, household items ,shoes(which they never get)without fail liz fills a sack every two weeks and it is taken away and sold off or distributed to third world countries. next thing i know LIZ goes out to buy new clothes cos she has room in her wardrobe..............we had some household stuff to move on cos we replaced them , a dinning table and chairs and a perfect tv, the tv was 3 years old and in perfect order, had to give it away because it was not state of the art flatscreen, the dinning room table was more or less given away, one guy asked me to deliver it to him down the country , at my expense.........my theory on stuff is "If i havnt worn it or unlikely to wear or use it in the next few weeks, give it away," sadly people want things for nothing nowadays, and when you gt things for nothing there is no respect for them. i know its a long winded thread, but thats my sixpence worth......
novaderrik May 25th, 08, 4:24 AM my brother and his wife had their first kid a year ago- and she wouldn't allow anything used to be given to the kid. nothing- no toys, no clothes, and not even the crib, changing table, or diaper garbage can.. it all had to be new. and things like diapers had to be the most expensive brand..
funny thing happened when the baby started out growing things and people stopped giving them free toys and diapers and clothes and they had to pay for them out of pocket- they (well, mostly she- my brother grew up with used hand me down junk from us older brothers and didn't need the "new" stuff like his only child wife did) started going to the Salvation Army for clothes instead of Target, and the kid even has a few toys from garage sales..
