: Difference between short and long headers?

Just wondering what the performance difference is. Looks like the long Doug's won't fit the 454 with AC (on a '70). Any thoughts?

As it happens i asked my engine guy that today, I was considering short headers and he told me you won't get the performance from shorties because you won't have the tube volume that the long headers have.It sounded reasonable, the more header tube volume the less back pressure.

If you are looking for specific elapsed time info or something like that, there are a lot of variables involved.

We put shorties on our 69 sbc because of ground clearance issues. Even with the shorties, the driver's side hangs down noticeably farther. We had to take a recip. saw to the street adapter (I think that's what it's called) to shorten it by a good two to three inches. Even with that, the driver's side still hangs noticeably lower.

Don't forget you have to add mufflers (I assume you are street driven since you have a/c). We added Super Turbos (yes, I like the Hooker Aero Chambers, but you are paying a lot more money for a name). When I hit the throttle it sounds very nice, but it's not loud enough to be a cop magnet (or at least no more so than a silver 69 Chevelle already is).

I don't really see how you can state they're the same, IMO they're not even similar other than maybe the sound deadening material used.

I'm NOT knocking the Super Turbos as we have the Thrush version of them on my brother's Nova. They sound great.

Both great mufflers, just not similar.

Oh, and staying on topic. From what I know, long tubes always make more power across the RPM range.

I think it was Hooker that made a medium-length header under the "Muscle Car Headers" Series, but I can't find them on summit anymore.

P.S.- If you go to the Holley/Hooker/Flowtech sites, the Aero and the Flowtech Afterburner soundclips sound mysteriously similar.

If you are referring to my comment, I'm not saying the Super Turbos and Hooker's are the same. I like the Hooker's, but the Hooker Aero's are more expensive and, at least in part, you are paying for a name. Were the Hookers a little more reasonable in price, I would have gotten those. (Actually, I would have preferred a chambered exhaust system but, at about $800, again, way too pricey).

Sort of like Hooker headers. They are nice mufflers, but damn, they are expensive. I decided to go with coated Patriots (I've been told they are Hedman knockoffs.)

darn, I wasn't wide awake I guess. I read "like the. . ." instead of " i like the. . ".

LOL, my bad, I appologize.

No apology necessary. I wish I could afford Hooker parts.

Thanks for the replies. Slowpoke, what you said re: the power range is sort of what I was looking for. The medium length sound like a good compromise. Any longs that fit with AC that you guys know of?
