: Taylor 135 Angle Wires 454
feedphillipnow Mar 1st, 05, 4:52 PM I was thinking about using this set for the 454, tall valve covers with full length dynomax headers & HEI Mallory. Ive never assembled wires before, whats needed, just a set of good wire crimpers? If you guys can let me know if this set will work that'd be great smile.gif Also would you guys use black or red wires with a black engine/ red dist. After the nitty girtty is out of the way then color smile.gif

Taylor PART NUMBER 73053
kjett Mar 1st, 05, 4:59 PM Best plug wires you can buy IMHO. They are all that I use after having tried MSD and numerous other brands. The connectors have a positive locking feature; no guessing whether or not they're making a good connection with the plug. Also, the wires can withstand MUCH higher temperatures than comparable wires. The number 8 plug is very close to the header primary on my engine. Running other brand wires after a short period of time the wire would become brittle and start cracking from being so close the the header. The last set of Taylor wires I had on my car were on there for 4 years with no problems whatsoever. In fact, I'm sure I could have reused them during the last rebuild, but I bought a new set anyway. The 135* boots make routing plug wires a piece of cake.
69ssmike Mar 1st, 05, 5:04 PM Same here, GREAT product!!! I prefer the black ones. Check my sig.
feedphillipnow Mar 1st, 05, 6:23 PM Ahhh slick, I do like the black. Well that parts a toss up but I'll go with these Taylors, Ive heard alot of good things and ive never used a 135 angle before sounds like it's much easier.
I just assembled a set of spiro-pro Taylor 8mm wires for the 454 in my boat this past weekend. They were 135* at the plug as well. If you get the universal set, like I did, you'll need a good spark plug wire crimper tool. I bought Taylor's professional spark plug wire cutter/crimper. It's a pricey $54 or so bucks though. As much as the plug wire set smile.gif . This tool makes the job a piece of cake! A cheaper one is available for $14.

feedphillipnow Mar 1st, 05, 7:10 PM A wire crimper/ cutter tool would work though right? I dont NEED anything special do I? smile.gif
69ssmike Mar 1st, 05, 7:13 PM They sell a special crimper, but ya that's what I used. Make sure ya lube the boots and put them on BEFORE you crimp the ends on!!!
feedphillipnow Mar 1st, 05, 7:43 PM Sounds good, I bought the tool, I see how its slotted for 7-8mm wires, I lost my old crimper anyways smile.gif Thanks guys.
Oh yeah, lube them with what type of lube? They didnt come with any type of assembly lube.
69ssmike Mar 1st, 05, 8:04 PM The wires will, diolectric? lube. Helps get the boots back down over the wire ends. Good set of instructions with the Taylors also.
Paddy Mar 1st, 05, 8:43 PM A small can of spray silicone worked fine for me. Gary
69ssmike Mar 1st, 05, 8:47 PM It's ok to use I'm sure, as long as you are not doing any painting in your garage. It causes fish eyes for a long time!!!
19Nova72 Mar 1st, 05, 9:22 PM Those are great wires, we put on on everything at work. If yur gonna build custom plug wires, you mine as well run 90 degree boots and run em under the headers graemlins/thumbsup.gif BTW I use WD-40 to slip the boots on and sometimes you will need to take a small screw driver and use it as leverage to pull the crimp through the boot. I use a set of MSD pliers at work that are real slick, think there like $100, but they are top quality and can be used for other jobs. Good luck
phel69 Mar 1st, 05, 9:23 PM I used a pair of side cutters and a pair of long nosed pliers to make up my Taylor 135s. Not the proper tools but they worked.
As stated above, lube the boots well before you try to put them on. The first one seemed impossible but by the eighth one they were a breeze. Be patient, they are great wires.
Alan Mar 1st, 05, 10:09 PM You can use many different tools to make these wires work. I wanted a Taylor-made ;) result, so I sprung the dough for the proper tool. Makes it super easy and you can't damage the conductor core. You spend more time figuring out how you want them routed than mounting the boots.
The Taylor wires come with a little silcon gel packet. Or any other lube others have suggested.
