: Best plug wire routing...
kazuaki Dec 13th, 04, 10:45 AM As I'm reassembling my car, I'd like to change my plug wire routing. I am making every effort to clean up the engine compartment and minimize the appearance of wiring. In addition, I'm not too fond of wire looms that mount to the valve cover bolts, as I check my solid cam lash regularly. This is on a small block with straight plug heads and 1-5/8" Hooker headers. I'm using 8mm Taylor wires. What is the best option? I see Moroso sells brackets for under header routing, what do these bolt to? Any suggestions and pictures of your setups would be great! Thanks
GM PARTS1 Dec 13th, 04, 11:59 AM When I had a SBC I used the loom bracket that mounted along the outside of valve covers then ran wires behind valve cover ;)

Eric68 Dec 13th, 04, 2:40 PM I am in the same boat with my 383 Greg -- check lash often and hate burning plug wires so I run mine under the headers.
I just made my own looms out of the Taylor wire separators and some aluminum bar stock. I just used longer screws in place of the screws that hold the two halves of the wire separator together so that I can make the screw go through the aluminum. I bent the aluminum to the shape I wanted and put a 1/4" hole in the other end..
On my 72 block there are two 1/4-20 threaded holes on each side of the block. I screw a wire loom into each one which keeps the wires off the headers. With the front pair of cylinders on each side I actually just run the wire between the motor mount and the block.
Here's a pic of the engine -- you can;t see the wire looms though.

When adjusting the lash all I do is lift the bracket up enough to clear the stud then they just hang there while I adjust valves. There's no need to pull the wires off the plugs.
How'd your freshen-up/rebuild go with the motor? Make any changes to improve power?
kazuaki Dec 13th, 04, 4:03 PM Eric, I like your idea a lot. If you are able to post any pics showing the brackets, that would be great. I'll look at my block and see if I have the same holes.
John, no upgrades at all :( . I spent all my damn money on the paint and body. Plus, once you do that, you need all new chrome, etc. I decided to rewire the entire car at the same time. It's a lot of work and everything is affected EXCEPT the drivetrain. I figure that was the best part of my car before, so it needs the least attention for now smile.gif
Hopefully, when the car is all back together, it will run as strong as before while looking a heck of a lot better. Once, I recover from this financially, there will be forced induction in my future ;)

Eric,
Very nice looking engine bay.
Eric68 Dec 13th, 04, 10:46 PM Thanks guys. :D I'll see if I can dig up a picture of my looms . . .

Although mines a big block, routing the wires under the headers is the way to go if you have to check the valvetrain often. I didn't want any looms bolted to the valve cover either so I made my own that bolt to a header and the accessory holes in the back of the cyl head. Heres a pic

novaderrik Dec 14th, 04, 5:35 AM go look under the hood of an early 90's Chevy truck with a TBI 305 or 350.
they have a pretty trick looking and durable setup- similar to the aftermarket stuff that bolts to the valve cover bolts, but it bolts to the side of the head. if you don't have the proper holes in your heads, you could mount them to a header bolt.

Note that I use the short motor mounts, but space them away from the block to allow more clearance to service/replace the plug wires if needed.
The nylon loom is home made, using blocks of nylon, paired and drilled to fit the wires and bolts.
thrasher Dec 14th, 04, 10:47 PM Not bad guys.
I'm really going to give the under the header deal a shot when I get my junk back on the road.
