: Alternator for a 327

Sup Chevelle bruddaz?

So I just picked up a 69 SS, that has the 396 yanked out of it and a 327 in it's place. It wasn't starting, so I replaced the battery. It started a couple of times, but died over night. I yanked the alternator and had it tested, failed, and I replaced it. Now every time I start the car and run it for a bit, I blow the 50 amp fuse on the firewall.

So here's my questions...

1. Does it need to be grounded some how?
2. Is 50 amps to small?
3. Am I doing something wrong that could be potentially fatal for the electical systems.

I'm kinda new on here, and this is the first Chevelle I've had the opportunity to work on. I will have many more posts about all things Chevelle and would appreciate any and all input.

I went down to the demonstration,
To get my fair share of abuse.
Singing "we're gonna vent our frustration,
And if we don't we're gonna blow a 50-amp fuse."

The alternator should be grounded through its case.
What does the 50 amp fuse provide power to? Have you added on to the circuit?
As long as the fuse is working properly your system should be protected. You don't want to exceed the rating of the wiring.

The fuse appears to be in the middle of the circuit between the battery and the rest of the wiring for the entire engine. I am very new to this, but it does not appear to be the original wiring set up. But like I said, it is this fuse that prevents me from starting the car again after I kill it, because it is a vital link in the ignition system (i.e., it exists between the battery and the alternator and starter solenoid). Right? Would a 75 am fuse fix the problem? Would some pictures help, since I am not spun up on things in their entirety?

Your power wiring should look roughly like this.

There should not be a fuse between the battery and starter.
