I posted a minimun size question before. But I found a 16 foot trailer for a reasonable price. its a carson trailer with a dovetail. So anyone tow with a 16 foot trailer? Fortunately the track is only 6 turns away from the house. Also what should I look at when checking a trailer? (Phil, if your reading this, its the trailer on craigslist. can you tell me what you think?) thanks jim

I'll go look and get back to you. 16' is a little short for a Chevelle. BRB

Jim click on the El Camino photo in my signature. It is sitting on an 18' long trailer that is 7' between the fenders. This is the smallest trailer I will use. Sometimes I wish I kept the 20'.

There is a 71 drag car somewhere in the Golf Links/Kolb area. I may be able to trade my El Camino for it. The drag car comes with a trailer and if I trade, the trailer maybe put up for sale. Hope to go see it tomorrow around 3 pm. 496, th400 with trans brake, narrowed 9", turns 10's.

Philip, what happened with finishing the Nova in your garage??????? You surely don't need no stinking big block to go 10's!!!!

Jim, my old trailer is for sale very reasonable. It's a little worse for the wear but paint and a little Thompsons on the wood is cheap.

Hey Marv, how have you been? Well the Nova is actually just going to be a more of a street car. Hopefully it will be able to get in the low 13's/high 12's. A 71 Chevelle that does 10's would be a rush :D

Thanks for the offer on the trailer. I your up north arent you? I really dont know about the reliability of my Jimmy to go too far out of town, especially hauling stuff with it. The strip is actually about 10 miles from my house.
Phil is the chevelle a black one? sitting on the side of the house by kolb? Guy down the streets got a LS5 70 chevelle with a 496 in it. He was running 11 flat the other day. and it still needed tuning. I think the first time out, he said it went high 10s. Good luck with the chevelle. If you put carson trailer in the search box under parts youll see the trailer come up. jim

If yo uhave seen it tell me if it is worth the drive over.
I'll go find the ad.

IMO the trailer is overpriced for what I see. I bought mine new for $2200 and it is an 18 footer. Used car trailers have to be lookedat real careful. I would be happy to go with you to look at any. If you want to go see Marv's we can take the trip in my truck.

Thanks for the offer on a road trip. Im not sure what we're going to do on the trailer. The one on craigslist is northwest. So maybe not too far from you. We might go and look at it this weekend, U of A is hosting the super regional for softball. So weather we play one or two games against Oklahoma saturday, im committed to be there. We decided on a trailer a couple weeks ago after renting one from uhaul. I just dont want to jump the gun on getting one too small or torn up. Jim

I realized I never answered about the car. Ive only seen it from the road,
So did you get to look at it? Jim

Jim, my old trailer is sitting in the yard where you came to look at my Dad's bronze Camino (Paloverde and 44th.) Doesn't look nearly this good anymore (http://www.small-block-chevy.com/Btrailer.html) and the electric goodies are gone from the front. Only problem is, it wants a lot of tounge weight to be stable above 65mph so tow vehicle needs to be capable. I always towed it with a little 1/2 ton and the Nova stuffed as far forward as would go. Made the truck light in the front which is flat dangerous IMO. If you don't have a good heavy suspension or a bagged rear suspension, you should probably pass on this one.

Marv, only thing im really going to use it for is to drag the elcamino from golf links and kolb to the drag strip. houghton road is only 45-50mph tops anyway. We decided to keep the 77 jimmy to use as a tow vehicle. its a 2 wheel drive. if that makes any difference. So what do you think? Maybe Phil will chime in too. Does it have brakes? If you guys say its not safe, I'll pass, but if you guys think it'll work, I'd like to check it out. I dont think I ever did see the bronze elcamino. But then again I dont remember half of the cars I go chasing around.
Funny about looking at elcamino's. You guys seen Chef's new project? I went and looked at it last year, A guy I know wanted a elcamino, (I bought a 72 from him) so I hooked them up. Then here it is last Saturday, Im driving home and I see a late 70's elky towing a 71 elky. We flipped a U turn I drive by the 71, glance out of the corner of my eye, and theres Justin with a smile a mile wide with his new car!

Marv that is a nice looking trailer. The problem appears to be the placement of the axles. They are to close to the front of the trailer, if moved back a bit it would tow much better. Not an easy undertaking. An easier cure would be to extend the tongue. The ball to axle length should be around 70% of the total length. The bed could also be extended over the new tongue length making more usable deck. Check the photo in my sig and you can see what I am referring to.

Jim it was probably the same car. It was moved into the back yard after parts were stolen from it. Has "shake and bake" on the rear quarter. Nice car, race only with gutted interior and lexan windows. I can't justify owning a race only money pit. Had it been more complete and able to drive around town to shows I would have considered it.

We were wondering what became of that chevelle. When we started with the 71 I thought about gutting everything but came to my senses. Figure, if I ever do decide to sell it. It would be easier to sell if it was a complete car, capable of being used as a driver too. On Marv's trailer. Are spring hangers just bolted to the frame? or is it a major undertaking to scoot the axles? Jim

Most spring hangers are welded on, but consider the fenders will also need moved. How long is the trailer? I still think 16' is to short for a Chevelle or El Camino. If the price is right the work may be worthwhile.

I have found that long trailers with the axles set behind the centerline of the deck tow nice. The 18' I have has a 5.5' tongue making it as overall as long as the 20' model that preceded it. Towing is exceptional empty or loaded.

Don't just think of going the 10 miles to the track. Once you have a trailer you will find many uses for it, BTDT and still doing it.
