I need some help on what springs to get for my engine. The combo is in my signature. The problem is that my heads have a 1.550" spring pocket and the springs I currently have (the comp cams 981 springs) have a 1.254" outside diameter... plus, I think I could use a better spring.

I've never assembled heads myself, but I want to do this for the experience and know-how.

I don't know how much rate and open and seat pressure is too much or too little. I don't know about installed height... does that matter or is it all dependant on rate/pressure (as long as all the springs have the same installed height)?

Also, I'm planning on upgrading my cam to one of Harold's designs by early 2004 and don't want to have to switch my springs again... I already have the 282S so I'm going to use this for now until I can afford a Lunati.

So, what springs should I get for the engine in my signature that won't be spinning more than 5000 on the street and maybe a trip to the track once or twice in it's lifetime? Please keep in mind, I'm on a budget.

Thanks in advance,

TTT

Also, what is the minimum acceptable clearance between the valve spring o.d. and the spring pocket? I really don't want to use spring cups because it will mess up my spring installed height.
