I've got a non-working dash speaker in my '65.
Thinking that any 4"x10" 10-Ohm speaker will do (since they are not visible to the casual observer) I bought couple of different used Delco ones to try out from E-Bay.
I've learned that the magnet is too big on the later model speakers, and neither my stock bracket nor the glove box fit with these types. I think I need only the small-magnet 10-Ohm type, but can't find any. The one OEM used-but-working speaker I saw recently went for $80 or so and was for an Impala but looked identical to mine. That was a bit steep for me. I placed an ad in our classifieds for a working used one but haven't heard a peep yet. So, what are my options with a somewhat tight budget? Anyone figure out a clever alternative to be used with a stock radio? I'm open to suggestion.
Nothing like the tinny mono sound of country music from AM radio to bring back memories.

just find whatever regular speaker you can find and use it. the 4 ohm load won't hurt your radio unless you crank the volume to 11 on a regular basis- and, in fact, might make it sound better.
but if you are worried about it, head to radio shack and get a 6 ohm resistor and put it inline, which i think will make the radio see a 10 ohm load.
or, get two smaller 4 ohm speakers and place them side by side in the stock opening, and run them in parallel (or is that in series? it's been a while since i played with stereos..) on the same circuit, which will give you an 8 ohm load.

A little pricey for super budget minded, but an option...

Derrick, the regular speakers I've found have magnets that are too big to fit the bracket, or allow the glovebox pocket to fit in place. Otherwise I'd do the resistor thing. The box itself only allows about 1/3" of clearance at the top. The orginal ones have relatively tiny magnets. And that's how I blew my original one - turning it up to 11 volume. I think it was a Merle Haggard song and I was working under the hood and wanted to be able to hear it outside....

This is a great link Dave- thanks for sharing it. Their 4x10 'special rectangle' speaker is a good enough match.
And yes, it is pricey - and shipping too.
I'll see if any offer or idea comes in from other folks on this topic before I do anything.

Years ago I had my speaker reconed and 20+ years ago it cost way more than those guys who are selling the correct speaker. I'd consider their speakers a bargain!

Various parts vendors sell a dual small round speaker combo that will fit in the same location, but they are intended for a more modern stereo deck and cost a lot more than those mentioned above, but they are an alternative. I doubt they are 10ohm speakers though and as such would probably be bad for your OEM radio.

Well I talked to the guy (Greg) who runs that Elecrto-Tech Radio repair site noted above from Dave. He sells the speakers too. Turned out he was a real nice guy and I will buy a speaker from him cause it is quite reasonable for a hard to find new reproduction part.
(Rich - you are right...the more I thought about it $58 with shipping isn't that bad)

I don't have a V8 rumble to my car...so the radio keeps me entertained.
