: Need pix: 4 spd tunnel opening
I'm converting from an on the column auto to a 4 speed and need to know where to mount the steel shroud (GU calls it a pan) that mounts to the tunnel. I have an approximate idea from the location of the shifter, but would appreciate it if someone has a picture of a factory setup so I can get the boot to line up correctly. Anyone?
Thanks,
Rich
kaljam May 13th, 08, 1:10 PM Hi Rich,
I'm in the process of replacing that shifter hump in my 72 original 4 spd car - no console (trans humps are different by the way). I've tried to attach photos to these replies and have no clue how to do it. If you give me your email I will send you pics of an original 4spd car in the process of the replacement.

Thanks for the responses Bill and Rob, I should've mentioned, this car is getting a console so the hump is different from the non console one. The opening is shaped in a more elongated fashion and angles down to the rear.
Gosh Rob, I hope you didn't take all of those pictures for just this response, it looks like you went to a lot of effort!
Thanks again,
Rich
rubadub May 13th, 08, 4:49 PM I took those pictures a while back for somebody else, I can't remember who it was, but anyway, your welcome Rich. I don't know if you looked at my website, but theres more stuff on 69's.

Smittie May 13th, 08, 4:53 PM When you raise your trans up with shifter handle attached you will mark the spot on the underside of the trans tunnel. Drill a hole and use that for your center. You will lay your new hump centered over the hole you just drilled. Then draw a line around your shifter hump and another 1 inch inside for your cut. See below:

Then lay your shifter hump over the opening and tack weld or screw down, add sealer and your done, see below:

Gravy_D May 13th, 08, 10:34 PM A fellow TC'er emailed me these measurements I used on the 4 speed hump w/console for my 68. They worked perfectly for me...
I created a line between the seat belt bolt holes over the tunnel, and then measured from that line to the hump opening. This measurement is 24 1/8".
I also measured from the console brace to the opening which is 16". I measured from the outside edge of the door sill to the edge of the opening. On the drivers side it is 31 5/16", on the passenger side it is 31 7/8" so apparently the hump opening is biased towards the drivers side.
Hope this is what you need
Hey thanks guys! I'm sure between the trial fit, the picture and the measurements it'll go in perfectly.
Thanks,
Rich
GearHead72 Dec 22nd, 08, 4:22 AM Hey guys,Just starting my 72 chevelle project and converting the car to a 4 speed, was wondering on the floor board is there like a stamp that you could just cut out and get a aftermarket hump to tack in.

wihaltom Mar 19th, 09, 5:17 PM Does anyone have the same information for a 64 Elky? I am converting from a Powerglide to 4 speed and need to do the same thing. Is the shifter hump really necessary on a non-console car? Seems like I have seen cars before that didn't have the hump, especially bench seat cars. I am putting in bucket seats so it may look weird without the hump but if I don't really need it, then I won't have to buy it and figure out where to put it.

On this car----the same hump is used for console and non console cars.
(So when you order the hump----get the console hump----as for some strange reason they also sell an incorrect non console hump)
Interestingly enough----that hump will only fit on the floor in one spot.
If it is layed on the floor in the right spot---outline around it and then cut an inch to 1-1/2" inside the outline.
I have a few pics of this from my 66

Bryan, Just a note to let you know how right you are about that hump fitting the floor in only one spot. I got my hump from Year One yesterday and laid it on the floor. It fits like a glove in that one exact spot and nowhere else. Thanks for your great info.:beers:
