dmartin1 May 13th, 08, 12:55 AM ok i bought the motor for 225$,
it has 10:5:1 wedge cut pistons and some other stuff like roller rockers ,etc etc etc.
it came out of a 1969 chevy v-8 2500 camper special.
it sais"high perf....f-8" on the block.
i also found soemthing saying a7-70
and the block casting number is 3969854
heads are 8975850
everyone that looked at it is pretty sure its a 396,,,but.......... help?
67-468 May 13th, 08, 5:25 AM I beleive that is a 396 or a 402 2 or 4 bolt. I sold one 2 years ago. It was a decent motor. You have to check the bore size.

'69Brian May 13th, 08, 5:29 AM Mortec.com list the block as a 69 396 or a 70 - 72 402 2 or 4 bolt mains.
Double check the numbers on the head.
FlameOut May 13th, 08, 10:55 AM How do you guys manage to get such good deals? I paid over 3x that for a 71 402, because that's all I could find. It's the same block as you, the 854, but with the 049 heads
kettbo May 13th, 08, 11:39 AM How about a 454 block STD bore with std GM pistons. Minimal taper, cleaned-up with a hone at the machine shop....needed 2 busted pan bolts removed....$200
FRYNTYR May 13th, 08, 12:38 PM I have a 71 402 I would have sold ya for $300,,,,,but you're in Pen>
dmartin1 May 13th, 08, 2:06 PM well its a whole motor except intake(which im going to run tunnel ram) and no carb or airfilter,,,,aiming for probly some holley 650's if i get bigger pistons, but problly 500's for now.
i picked it up at pick your part auto salvage,,,there nation wide,,,,BEST place to get cheap motors that they dont know run.
i also picked up a 1981 chevy 454 big block all stock,,,except edelbrock intake and 650 edelbrock carb, running,,,,for 300...he wanted 350 but i chewed him down,,its going in the chevy s10
dmartin1 May 13th, 08, 2:10 PM i looked at the wedge cut pop up pistons,,,and they say its 30 over,,,,(im 16) so me and my dad checked out the bore,no lip, whoever had it went through it,it still had brand new head gaskets, and the intake ports are insanely clean, and brand new oil.
we brubng it home and put the stock intake and a spare carb we had on it and started it,,,idk what type of cam but its pretty lopey.
i say good deal for 225$?
also has stainless steel roller rockers, and triple springs.
now,we think there big valve heads(there off a 427),,,cause the valves are pretty big and very close together.are they always like that or no?
