Since I may have to replace my pistons, going from .030 to .060 or .040 maybe, (whatever piston size they have.. I like the SRP "10.25:1" pistons I saw, and will give me from 10.2 to 10.7 (10.2 w/ 118cc, 10.7 w/ 112cc, I have 116.5cc), I was figuring now wouldn't be a bad time to make is a 489-496. I figure if I'm going to buy new pistons, bearings, rings, and whatever, I might as well slpash for a crank and turn something bad (a questionable judgement rebuild) into something good (30 cubes).

Whats the best bang for the buck crank that will live in a solid roller 489-496, which I figure will make 700hp max, but to be safe get a crank good for like 750 or whatever.. I suppose a good, quality forged unit is all I need, and nothing too special. Is one of those callies dragonslayer or SCAT 4340 (or whatever it is) forged ones good enough? They are like $550-700...

What other brands? Also-- what sort of labor costs can I expect to balance the stuff and do the work to get it all assembled? I already have eagle 6.385 rods (long rod 454), so that part is all set I think..
Or do you guys think this isn't worth it? The cam is already bought, it was going to go in right away, but now with the blowby and piston to wall clearance issues, I don't know what we are going to do. I am waiting for the cam swap guy to give his second opinion. its a 287/291 @ .020, 256/260 @ .050, 170/175 @ .200, .643/.643 113 LSA solid roller (comp grind, CR lift rule lobes), and I already have a set of isky red zones for lifters..

Both the Callies Dragon Slayer & the Scat are excellent cranks.
For the money I would opt for the Scat.
I use Scat's stuff a lot with no problems in over 12 years. Excellent quality control.
With the long rod you should be able to internal balance it fairly reasonably.
I have done a "few" & they needed no Tungsten with SRP's, & H beam Scat rods.
You might need one piece on each end at most, depends on the weight of your rods.

email me, if I can help, we have pretty fair pricing on Scat ;)

I gotta feeling your 1/4" longer stroke may just tune your solid roller down a schosh b/c it should act slightly smaller in a longer stroked motor!

This to me would be great b/c it would tend to build more torque some lower in the rpm range.

I found this out messing around with D2K between a 454 and a 496 but still keeping the same cam..

CAN you say less gear...

I rebuilt my 468ci BBC with Scat 4.00 crank and it internally balanced easily. General consensus is that Scat holds up well and is good quality for the money like Mike said. I also run the Eagle 6.385 rods and run Comp Cam 308AR .651 lift. If your contemplating a build up by all means recommend the Scat 4.250 to make 496ci! Goodluck with your buildup! :D
