well everything was going great planned for paint early june.I save right rear quarter for last since when I purchased my chevelle 18 years ago I took it to a shop and had right rear repaired.had purchased panel from body line down.shop was decent and didn't expect a problem.weel this is what I found sat. night.. would you guys install just what npd calls a face panel or entire quarter. am leaning twards entire panel even though is $160 more.at least I don't have to pay freight since npd is only hour away in ocala.

area at door jam runs to the body line then all the way to the rear.appears that this butthead just cut out bad area, beat in remaining metal, then layed patch on and tried to weld(if that's what you call it).wish the guy was still around.anyway that's my rant for the month.thanks for any input.

There is a place in Bradenton I've been getting my panels through, Mother Truckers, and the quarter panel is only costing me 369. Savings of 90 bucks over NPD, but the shipping will be 140. Now I have to decide if I can drive to Ocala for 50 bucks and break even. Have it shipped to my shop, or drive to Ocala comes out the same.

As for your question, I don't have a clue. I'm in a very similar boat. I need just a skin, but need the rear part where it wraps around the tail light. They don't make a 95% for my 69 model.

Is that the only bad area on your quarter panel?

Hmm, not much left there to weld the skin onto. Might be time for a full quarter. The full quarter will cost less to install than trying to fix the mess, too.

Since you've already welded one quarter, when you're done, wanna come down and help me with mine? I'm very hesitant to do the dirty deed with my meager welding skills.

did the left side @13 years ago remember the basics, but am sure I don't remember just how much work it will be.you will be fine.just a ton of spot welds to drill out.take your time and practice doing spot and plugs welds on old piece.i'm sure your welds can't be worse than my beginner welds 13 years ago.will have to meet up at a show some time.if you hear of any in between us drop me a p.m.

Sounds like a winner. As for removing the quarter, I haven't completed that yet. Working on it, but am not removing any more until the new quarter is ordered. Money tight as summer comes.....

update:decided to replace entire quarter and also while I was there to replace inner and outer rockers.started with rocker(what a pain) in order to keep body line references.on saturday my long time frien came over and we drilled all spot welds and remove quarter.took about 3 hours.trial fit of new quarter went better than expected.no problem areas found:hurray:decided to treat metal under panel with a rust preventer.could not find por15 local, but local ppg site had something called ospho.seems similar as it turned the area black and hard as a rock.here are some pics.hope to install and weld panel this week.

what's funny is that I have almost the exact picture of my buddy from 18 years ago when we replaced the left side.

Ok, now a question.....how did you remove the lead at the quarter? Did you use a torch or.........my new quarters are on order and will be removing the old very soon.....found the lead line, but am not sure how to proceed.

I used and air hammer with a chisel blade.started at back window and moved forward.came out in two pieces.probalbly the easiest part.went through 2 drill bits drilling out spot welds.found easiest was to drill a pilot hole then follow up with a 5/16 bit.
were did you get your panels from.got mine from npd in ocala.so far very happy with fit.

Found a seller online (ebay) Standardsheetmetalandtrim and got the pair for cheaper than NPD, Year One, OPGI, etc....shipping was $150 for both and he said they are goodmark panels. I am of the belief that it doesn't matter whose name is one them, none will fit perfectly<G>

I'm confused...the lead came out in two pieces? As for the spotwelds, the only ones I have left are at the door jamb and a few along the bottom and whatever welds are under the lead.

Also, are your wells already tacked in? before the quarter that is?

flpackerbacker
May 20th, 08, 4:56 PM
I had put new wells in already.did not know extent of hack job.so far my panel seems to linig up good.have seen no real bad areas.the lead broke in two pieces while removing.after the lead is out,my panel was spot welded to the inside structure then the roof was spot welded to the quarter.I drilled the roof spots first the slid and air hammer with a long chisel bit from the below and popped the panel from the inner piece.be careful along the drip rail as this will bend easy.I would cut it at the quarter and remove the left over later.

ok guys.installed new quarter tonight using screws for the moment until I am 100% sure.fits pretty well except for lower corner of rear window, bvut I believe I can fix this easy enough.other area is at top of door.gap seems too wide.it is actually better than with old quarter on,believe that problem is probably the repop door.any suggestions or should I just live with it.my gap to the rocker is even front to rear.thanks for advise.

Looking good there. As for the doors, I saw a post some time ago where the repop was shorter. He took and extended the edge some how welding in new metal to close the gap. Sorry I can't be more help, but it's worth a search.

Yeah, 1 piece. I didn't do mine until I had seen several people here and other places rave about it. Plus I needed the piece in the rear that does not come with the 3 or 7 piece.
