Need help in selecting clutch for my 66 4spd. 427 solid roller 3.73 posi, steel flywheel approx 550 torque , weekend cruise ,street / strip car ... have NOS B&B Weber single disc 3000 lb,assume pedal pressure brutal also assume this old style clutch will really shock the driveline :( ..... leaning toward the Mc leod but would like opinions from those with more experience with these clutches than my self. I'd call McLeod/Weber for a recommendation. For 550 ft/lbs I seriously doubt they'll recommend the Street Twin, as that would be overkill in terms of both holding power and complexity. I bet they'll recommend their Dual Performance disc (similar to a Centerforce Dual Friction) and a diaphragm pressure plate, but that's just a hunch.

For my car (also ~ 550 ft/lbs) I let them recommend a clutch. They sent me what I described above-- a dual performance disc and a diaphragm pressure plate. After installing it and feeling the pedal (feather light... I'm talking a lighter pedal than a friend's new Civic!) I had very serious doubts it would hold, but guess what-- NO slippage even when I'm doing things I shouldn't be doing. tongue.gif

I'd call the experts and let them help, and post back with what they say.

And that might be important. Think the Centerforce DF is a great compromise between high rpm holding power and hit. A friend recently broke his ST10 in a 68 Camaro with a 510. At first I thought, sheez, he's just harnessing so much more power. Au contraire We raced and I out-mph'ed him in every run. And figures he's 300 lbs lighter. My last combo wasn't as hot ( the new UD cam ROCKS!) and A Muncie survived well behind the CF>DF.

It's a great clutch, but I think I'd check the balance.

So Gene are you saying the CF hits a little softer ?? yet still holds ? Whatmakes it different than say the mcLeod

The Centerforce weights on the pressure plate diaphram is what makes it different than all the others. It can have a light diaphram but still offer plenty of holding power which increases with RPM. I have had great luck with my Centerforce after breaking at least 6 Borg and Beck/Long style pressure plates.

I highly reccomend the Centerforce dual friction. My 454 makes 625 rwhp with nitrous and the Centerforce holds fine. I figure this is real close to 800 flywheel hp since it was through full exhaust. I have a friend who has a 825 hp 540 in a vette and he can make the Centerforce slip in 5th gear. 3.07 ratio.

I plan on going to a bigger shot of nitrous and taking off the exhaust to make approx. 700 rwhp, I will be adding a Mcloud dual disk.

I have to admit I was a bit surprised with Centerforce Dual Friction Clutch. I just put one in my 500hp 396, with a 4 spd and I love it!!!!

Bill, I speculate on the hit, since I really don't know. But my buddy 509Camaro was running a custom done steel disc deal. too hard IMHO.

Well, the machinist who built my motor did a superb job on the internals it seems ( except for cam phasing , he got it bassackwards). He did the balance job. I had the flywheel balanced separately.( which should be OK on an internally balanced engine , right? neutrally balanced flywheel. ). But there is still a slight, and I do mean slight out of balance at 4000+. Very slight. But its there. Akin to having a bolt or even washer gone off the clutch. ( No , there all present and accoutned for).

I wish I had the clutch balanced double checked is all. The shop that balanced the flywheel ( not he same shop that balanced the motor), said they couldn't do it with the clutch mounted on the flywheel.

You spin these 427 right up there for best power, I wanted it dead nuts perfect.

I had a vibration problem with a DF clutch in a 406 powered Vette I used to own. Once the clutch was out, I could see that the weight ring was sliding off to one side causing the out of balance condition (I may still even have pictures somewhere...). Replaced the clutch with another identical DF and never had the problem again. Other than that, the clutch worked great. I just bought another identical clutch for my new 540.

Thanks for the feedback I have heard of many who like the CF but also it seems QC can sometimes be off re this balance weight issue...... that is why I was considering the McLeod and wanted to see if any had used a Similar McLeod product with success

Gene ... Ok I see what you are saying get the clutch / flywheel balanced as an assembly

Thanks Guys
