I have about 300 miles on my new ultradyne cam in my 396 and for the last two outings I have been getting some noise that sounds like when I broke a pushrod then it goes away. It does not totally go away it is still faint, but definately not like when it starts. It also only seems to do this when the engine is warm. I do not know if I should adjust valve and if so should I use the EOIC tequnique, any advise would be great

hydraulic cam? be a hero, aggravate the environmentalist whackos,,,,adjust them while its running, the most accurate way to do it or easiest way to get them all equal,,,although I have suprised myself adjusting them before the intake was put on,by taking the up and down free play out of the pushrod, while tightening the adjusting nut.

One at a time, and just as you said, when the rocker starts to chatter, tighten untill you don't hear it,then 1/4 turn. Don't forget to check oil level when your done graemlins/clonk.gif

Spin the p/r's between your thumb and finger while you sneak up on the dead spot, then say a 1/4 turn more should get you real close..

Done it many times!!!!!

does the "general" do it while its running????
i used to do it that way till i learned how to do it right......its just my honest opinion.different lifters require different tuning.some hydraulic lifters require lash and others require 0 lash.but never have i heard of a cam manufacturer require you to adjust them running.but then again they make tabs that fit over the rocker oiler to keep them from getting to messy,

Sounds to me like you have a faulty lifter or possibly a lobe going flat. The lifters rotate in their bores, so the noise may come and go as the lifter rotates.

One of the big problems with adjusting the valves while the engine is running is that you have no reference point. You don't know where the plunger is in its travel. If you have a leaky lifter, the adjustment will continue until the plunger is bottomed out. A quarter turn after that, you have a valve that doesn't close.
If you use the ICEO method, you will know when the pushrod begins to push the plunger down, and how far down it is when the engine is running.
