I'm putting a 427 in to a `65 and I would like to know if anybody can tell me the what my hood clearence will be.I have to pick a intake and I'm told that I'm very limited in my choice. It's a oval port motor. The car is torn down so thats the reason I'm asking.

Here again, we don't know your intended purpose, but recently we were running a '66 with an oval port BBC with a Performer 2-O with no problems. The car now has a 454 HO crate with the GM dual plane, again no problems. Long time ago, we ran a '67 SSJA with a tall (for the era) single plane with a 1-1/2" spacer. No air cleaner though. The top of the carb was only about 1-1/2" from the underside of the hood on that setup. The key is to get the right drop down air cleaner base and work with the filter thickness.

I posed a similar question a while back for my '65 that will be receiving a oval port-headed 496. I had 3 intakes: (1) Performer - no clearance issues, but RPM limited (2) RPM Q-Jet - may have hood clearance issues resulting in a short, restrictive air cleaner, even with a drop-base air cleaner (3)GM #163 intake - good RPM capability and a 3" air filter; this intake came recommended by a couple "knowledgeable" members.

My engine is assembled and will be installed, God willing, this weekend. I didn't feel comfortable with the SQ to O-port mismatch and it's ability to seal. I dunno, maybe I was trying to use the wrong gasket. I decided to take a chance on the RPM. If the hood clearance is too tight with a 3" filter on a drop base air cleaner, I may go hoodless until I get a 2 1/2" fiberglass cowl hood. I'll post my results when I have them.

The intended purpose is a dual plane manifold good from about 2000/6500 a strong street motor.I'm looking at the Edelbrock air-gap the Weiand action plus and Stealth.I'll check out the GM #163.I intend to use my stock hood.

well, i know of a 66 Chevelle with a performer RPM with a Holley and a 3" drop base air cleaner that fits nicely under the hood with just about enough clearance to run a 4" element. i just put a 454 with a perfromer 2-0 in a 67 CHevelle that had about 2" of clearance with a 14X3 drop base GM chrome air cleaner.
